A jazz band with an average age past 80 has played the same Art Deco lobby bar every evening since long before either of you was born, and that continuity, more than any skyline photo, is what makes an evening in Shanghai feel romantic rather than merely impressive.

Walk Wukang Road and Anfu Road hand in hand
The former French Concession’s quietest romantic stretch runs along Wukang Road past the 1924 Normandie Apartments and on to Anfu Road, where converted historic villas now hold artisan gelato counters and small garden courtyards. Go on a weekday morning if you want the street closer to empty than photogenic.
A private gondola through Zhujiajiao at dusk
For a slower, quieter evening outside the city center, a private wooden canopy boat drifts under red paper lanterns along the stone canal walls of Zhujiajiao water town. It suits a couple who has already done the Bund and wants somewhere the crowds have thinned out.
