A Romantic Getaway to Sheki, Not the Coast
Nobody comes to Sheki for the water. The romance here is built out of stone, wood and candlelight, in a mountain town 300 km from Baku with no coastline anywhere near it.
An 18th-century room, if you can get one
The centerpiece of a Sheki romantic trip is a night inside the Yukhari Karavansaray, a 300-room Silk Road fortress-inn converted into the 14-room Karvansaray Hotel. Vaulted stone ceilings, thick timber doors, and a central cobblestone courtyard that empties out once the day’s tea-house visitors leave: after dark, it feels closer to the 18th century than anything else in town. Fourteen rooms is a small number against demand, so if the caravanserai is full, Sheki Palace Hotel a short walk from the Khan’s Palace is the next-best base, and Macara Sheki City Hotel offers a more modern, comfortable fallback with a garden setting.
An evening built around the view, not the water
Skip any itinerary built around a lake or a river here and build the evening around elevation instead. Gagarin Restaurant, perched on the upper slope of town, looks out over Sheki’s terracotta roofs and the Caucasus range at dusk, grilled lamb and a glass of local pomegranate wine included. Afterward, a quieter stop at one of the small garden cafes along the river for a shared samovar of tea and a plate of walnut Sheki halva makes a slower, less structured close to the night than a formal restaurant booking would.
The quiet museum, not the crowded one
For a private, unhurried half hour together, the Shekikhanovs’ House beats the Khan’s Palace next door: the same era of frescoes, painted with scenes from Nizami Ganjavi’s Khosrow and Shirin, but almost none of the palace’s tour-group traffic. It rewards a slow walk through rather than a checklist visit.
Planning it properly
Spring and autumn bring the mildest weather for evening walks through the UNESCO-listed old town’s cobblestone lanes; carry cash, since manat is what nearly everything here runs on, steady at roughly 1.70 to the US dollar since 2017.
