A single square meter of Sheki’s stained glass can hold up to 14,000 individual pieces of wood and glass, locked together without a single nail, screw or drop of glue. No tour bus has ever managed the cobblestone lanes of Sheki’s old town, and none ever will: the streets are simply too steep and narrow, which is exactly why walking here works so well. Route 1: Yukhari Bash, fortress to market The main event is a roughly 2-hour descent from the Nukha Fortress down Mirza Fatali Akhundov Street through the historic Upper Town, part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Sheki, passing craft shops, the Yukhari Karavansaray and its courtyard tea house, and brick mosques along the way.

Nobody comes to Sheki for the water. The romance here is built out of stone, wood and candlelight, in a mountain town 300 km from Baku with no coastline anywhere near it. An 18th-century room, if you can get one The centerpiece of a Sheki romantic trip is a night inside the Yukhari Karavansaray, a 300-room Silk Road fortress-inn converted into the 14-room Karvansaray Hotel. Vaulted stone ceilings, thick timber doors, and a central cobblestone courtyard that empties out once the day’s tea-house visitors leave: after dark, it feels closer to the 18th century than anything else in town.

There is no flight into Sheki, however a listing might phrase it. Every real multi-day route through this town starts with a bus, a shared taxi or a rental car on the ground. Route 1: the Silk Road circuit from Baku The standard 3-day version runs Baku to Shamakhi, then Lahij with its coppersmith workshops, on to Gabala, and into Sheki for two nights before doubling back to Baku. It is the most-run route for a reason: each stop is a genuinely different kind of place, mosque architecture in Shamakhi, metalwork in Lahij, mountain resort infrastructure in Gabala, and Silk Road heritage once you reach Sheki, rather than four variations on the same town.

Fourteen rooms is not many, and every one of them is inside an 18th-century stone caravanserai built for Silk Road traders, not honeymooners, which is exactly why couples book it out first. Sleep inside the caravanserai The Yukhari Karavansaray, one of the largest surviving Silk Road caravanserais in the South Caucasus, runs 14 refurbished rooms as the Karvansaray Hotel around a vast cobblestone courtyard shaded by old trees. The public tea house and courtyard stay open to non-guests 11:00 to 19:00, but staying the night is a different experience entirely: a vaulted stone room, thick timber doors, and the courtyard fountain running after the day-trippers have gone.

Historians still argue over who actually built Sheki’s most famous building, and no attraction tour here resolves it for you: the palace guide will simply tell you the two names and move on. The Khan’s Palace and its unresolved question The Palace of Sheki Khans , completed in 1797 on the high ridge of Yukhari Bash, is the reason most tours exist at all: six rooms of frescoes by Usta Gambar Karabakhi, nail-free shebeke stained glass, and two 500-year-old plane trees shading the courtyard.

Search “adventure sports Sheki” and you will find lists promising rock climbing routes and mountain biking trails that do not exist here. Sheki is a mountain town, not an adventure park, and it is worth knowing the difference before you pack gear you will not use. What genuinely exists Trekking is real and good: trails run from Kish village up into the high pastures around Mount Khan Yeylağı, moderate to strenuous depending on how far you go, through beech and oak forest that stays cool even in summer.
