Azerbaijan for Two: Evenings and Overnights
Before you book flights for two. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of the Armenian border, and against all but essential travel to the Karabakh-area districts it names, because mines and unexploded ordnance remain. The US State Department’s advisory is Level 3, Reconsider Travel. With the Armenia and Russia land borders closed, couples fly into Baku. Everything suggested here is in Baku, Sheki or the Gabala foothills, outside the restricted areas. The official pages are at gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
Azerbaijan does not run on honeymoon packages. What it offers couples is smaller: a seafront walk after dark, a long tea in the Old City, a night in a UNESCO town and a weekend in the mountains. This page lays out those pieces so you can combine them. Costs are in manat (AZN), at about 1.70 to the US dollar.
One evening in Baku
Start on Baku Boulevard at sunset, when the promenade is cool and full of walkers. It runs along the water to the International Mugham Center, a hall devoted to mugham, the improvised modal music of tar, kamancha and daf that UNESCO listed in 2008. The centre’s hours and programme were not confirmed, so look up a concert before building a dinner around it. Every autumn the city also hosts the Baku Jazz Festival, and the 2026 edition closed with a finale at the Maiden Tower in mid-October; dates move from year to year.
Afterwards, ride the funicular to Highland Park, a trip that costs about 1 AZN. The viewing terrace looks over Baku Bay with the Flame Towers lit up, and the view itself is free. Go for the last light and stay until it is dark.
A slow hour over tea
Black tea in Azerbaijan comes in small pear-shaped glasses called armudu, alongside jam such as white cherry, walnut or fig, with lemon and sugar lumps. The Tea Treasury Museum in the Old City is free and a calm place to start. Afterwards, walk the lanes of Icherisheher without a plan. The Maiden Tower costs 19 AZN and closes at 19:00, so go in the afternoon if you want the top. Official fees are listed by the reserve.
A night in Sheki
Sheki is a long journey, about 283 km and 6 to 6.5 hours by bus from Baku, and it earns its place only if you stay overnight. The Khan’s Palace, a UNESCO monument, is known for its shebeke windows, small panes of coloured glass fitted into wooden lattice. A foreign adult ticket is 15 AZN, and photography inside is restricted. The old quarter around it is quiet in the evening. Order piti, a lamb and chickpea stew cooked in an individual clay pot, and finish with Sheki halva. To compare guesthouses and hotels, search stays in Sheki .
Mountain air in Gabala
Gabala lies about 220 km from Baku, a drive of 3.5 to 4 hours, in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus. Lake Nohur nearby has rowing boats. In summer, the Tufandag resort runs rope lines, a mountain swing and hiking; its own page carries hours and prices. For a mountain stay, compare Gabala hotels .
A summer afternoon on the coast
A 2026 beach guide lists Amburan Beach Club at Bilgah, on the Absheron coast, as open. The Caspian is shallow and salty here. Beach clubs change from season to season, so confirm that it is open before you arrange a day around it.
Practical notes
Apply for an e-visa at evisa.gov.az at least three days before you fly. Cards work in Baku, and AZN cash covers villages and small guesthouses. Use a ride app, or agree a price before a street taxi starts.
