Southern Iceland for Two
Five moments make up a good couple’s trip through Southern Iceland: two soaks, a beach at the edge of the ice, a dark sky and a viewpoint on the sea. They are given here in the order that suits a weekend. Prices are in Icelandic króna (ISK).
1. Soaking at the Secret Lagoon
Flúðir is home to the Secret Lagoon , where adults (15 and over) pay 4,500 ISK and seniors from 67 or disabled guests with ID pay 3,300 ISK. The gates open at 10:00. Closing is at 19:00 between 1 October and 31 May, and at 20:00 from 1 June to 30 September. Renting a towel or swimsuit costs 1,200 ISK per piece.
2. Lakeside at Fontana
The baths at Laugarvatn were renovated and reopened in 2026. Adults (16 and over) pay 7,490 ISK, seniors and disabled visitors pay 6,490 ISK, and the site is open from 10:00 to 21:00, which is the later of the two soaks. Price details sit on the Fontana website . A rye-bread bakery tour can be added as its own booking, with departures at 11:45 and 14:30 and, in summer only, 10:15.
3. Diamond Beach and the lagoon
Jökulsárlón is the glacier lagoon, and Diamond Beach lies beside it. The beach is open to the public, and sunset hours change a lot through the year, so look up the time for your date. A boat ride together is possible on the amphibian boat (7,100 ISK per adult 13 and over, May to November, about 30 to 40 minutes), booked via icelagoon.is . Both places belong to Hornafjörður, part of the Southern Region since 2020.
4. A dark sky on the South Coast
Lodges outside the villages see more of the night sky in the dark season. Northern Lights cannot be promised, so book two or three nights and follow the forecast at vedur.is .
5. The sea stacks from a distance
Reynisfjara and the Reynisdrangar stacks look best from behind the line. The yellow and red lights on the official signs set the limits: stay out of the yellow zone when yellow is lit, and do not go beyond the sign when red is lit. The waves can race up the sand with no notice, which is why the basalt columns and the Hálsanefshellir cave are off limits in rough surf. After the 2026 winter storms, do not count on getting to either.
Small practical points
- Car parks at the main sights are paid, usually around 1,000 ISK.
- Short winter days make daylight driving the safer plan. Status: road.is .
- Alerts: safetravel.is . Emergency number: 112.
