Reykjavik Sights: First Visit and Return
A first morning in Reykjavik needs few tickets. Most landmarks sit within a short walk of each other and cost nothing, and the extras are saved for the second day or the second trip.
First visit: five landmarks in a loop
Begin at Hallgrímskirkja, a 74.5 m Lutheran church designed by Guðjón Samúelsson to echo basalt columns. Its organ has 5,275 pipes. The nave is free outside services, and the tower lift goes up to open arches with views over the tin roofs and Mount Esja. Tower tickets are sold in the church shop and cannot be booked ahead, so arrive early on clear days. Hours shift between winter and summer on hallgrimskirkja.is .
Walk down Skólavörðustígur, a rainbow-painted street of galleries, and reach the harbour. Harpa has a glass facade made of coloured bricks designed with Ólafur Elíasson, and the public foyers are open daily from 09:00 to 18:00 at no charge. A short walk along the Sæbraut promenade reaches the Sun Voyager, a stainless-steel sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason from 1990. Finish at the Tjörnin pond, where more than 40 bird species gather. The path around it is 1.5 km, and City Hall has a free relief map of Iceland. The loop takes about three hours at a relaxed pace.
Second day: Perlan and the long view
Perlan stands on Öskjuhlíð hill about 2.5 km south of downtown, on top of hot-water storage tanks. Exhibitions are open from 09:00 to 21:00, and the dome has an observation deck, a planetarium show and an artificial ice cave. The ice cave is the same all year, so it works on a wet day. Ticket options are on perlan.is , and the hill is reachable on foot or by city bus.
Return visit: Grandi and the water
Walk the Old Harbour piers and continue into Grandi, the former fishing district now full of food stalls, chocolate and ice cream makers, and design studios. Whales of Iceland and FlyOver Iceland are both here. Whales of Iceland opens 10:00 to 17:00, and FlyOver (ISK 5,690 online, 100 cm minimum height) opens 09:00 to 18:30. Whale-watching boats leave the Old Harbour all year, and puffin trips run from 20 April to 20 August. You can compare harbour boat tours .
Return visit: beyond the city
The Golden Circle, South Coast and Reykjanes are the classic next steps. Þingvellir parking costs ISK 1,000 per car, with one fee covering every lot that day. At Reynisfjara, stay 30 m from the water and never turn your back on the sea. The Blue Lagoon is 50 km away and timed, pre-booked entry only. Details are on the day trips page , and live hazards are on safetravel.is .
Light and wind
Midnight sun fills late May to late July with near-constant light, so sights are open to the late evening hours. Winter days are four to five hours long in December, and wind is strong all year. Pack a windproof shell whatever the month.
Verdict
Do the five-landmark loop on your first morning, and put the Hallgrímskirkja tower before lunch on the clearest day. The Reykjavik City Card (ISK 6,100 for 24 hours) is worth it only if you add several museums.
