Reykjavik Activities on Any Budget
Reykjavik rewards a small wallet better than most capitals, because its best moments are a swim in a public pool, a walk along the harbour and a hot dog from a stand that has stood since 1937. Prices below are in Icelandic krona (ISK), and cards or phones work almost everywhere, so there is no need to carry cash.
Free, and still worth a morning
The waterfront promenade on Sæbraut leads to the Sun Voyager steel sculpture, which looks best at sunset. Walk west and you reach Harpa, where the glass foyers are open daily from 09:00 to 18:00 with no ticket. Hallgrímskirkja’s nave is free outside services, and City Hall beside the Tjörnin pond has a large relief map of Iceland you can study for nothing. The Reykjavik Botanical Garden in Laugardalur is also free to enter.
Under ISK 2,000
The neighbourhood pool is the local ritual. Adult entry is ISK 1,500, ages 10 to 17 pay ISK 400, and children aged 0 to 9 with a guardian swim free. Laugardalslaug has a 50 m outdoor pool, hot tubs and a slide, Sundhöllin has rooftop tubs, and Vesturbæjarlaug is the friendly west-end favourite. ISK 2,000 to 6,000
The Reykjavik City Card costs ISK 6,100 for 24 hours, 8,500 for 48 and 10,500 for 72. It covers city buses, the eight public pools, around 17 museums and the Viðey ferry, so it pays off when you plan several museums plus a pool. FlyOver Iceland in Grandi costs ISK 5,690 booked online and ISK 6,250 at the gate; riders must be at least 100 cm tall. Check hours on flyovericeland.com .
Splurge days
Sky Lagoon in Kópavogur sells two passes, Saman and Sér, and both include the Skjól Ritual. The minimum age is 12, and slots are booked online ahead of time. The Blue Lagoon is a half-day outing, about 50 km away on the Reykjanes Peninsula, with timed pre-booked entry in Comfort, Premium and Signature tiers. It never has one flat price, so read the options at bluelagoon.com . Eruptions can restart on the peninsula at short notice, and Grindavík is not open to sightseers, so check safetravel.is before you drive out.
Boat trips from the Old Harbour sit in the same bracket. Whale watching runs all year, and Elding sails puffin tours from 20 April to 20 August. Northern lights season runs roughly September to April and is closed to you in the midnight-sun months of late May to late July.
Verdict
Spend the money on one lagoon and one boat trip, and fill every other hour with the free list and a pool, and see the walking tours page for routes. The mix costs a fraction of a typical city break. If your first evening is free, take a pool visit and the hot dog and call it a day for under ISK 2,500.
