Romantic Plans for Two in Swakopmund
Swakopmund is a cool, quiet seaside town, and its romantic side is about light and space rather than beach weather. Evenings on the seafront, a sunrise over the dunes and a long drive to a wild shore are the moments couples tend to remember. This page arranges them in the order of a day, from dusk to dawn to the full-day outing. Costs are in Namibian dollars (N$) where given.
Dusk on the jetty
The iron and concrete jetty runs about 260 m out into the Atlantic. A wooden jetty was finished here in April 1905, and the present structure was begun in 1912. It was planned to reach 640 m, stopped far short of that and never served the cargo purpose it was designed for. Since a restoration in 2010 it has been open to walkers, and a seafood restaurant sits at the far end. Book ahead if you want a table at sunset, and ask the restaurant about its current hours. Gondwana Collection tells the story of the jetty and its oyster bar .
Next to it, the Mole is an older breakwater begun in September 1899. It makes an easy place to stroll before or after dinner. Bring a jacket, because evening air by the water is cool.
Dawn over the dunes
A hot-air balloon flight over the dune belt is the signature early start. Hot Air Ballooning Namibia CC runs flights from Swakopmund, and the whole outing takes about 4 hours including transfers, with about 45 minutes airborne. Wind and fog cancel flights often, so do not schedule it on your last morning. Ask for the current fare when you enquire.
A day at Sandwich Harbour
At Sandwich Harbour, tall dunes end directly at the water. It lies about 55 km south of Walvis Bay, so roughly 85 to 90 km from Swakopmund, and is a Ramsar wetland. Since 1 April 2026 visits must go with a registered operator, which makes this a guided day or sunset trip leaving from Walvis Bay. Tides set the route along the beach. Ask whether any park fee is included; the Ramsar record describes the site.
Seeing it from above
Several operators at Swakopmund and Walvis Bay offer scenic flights of about 15 to 30 minutes along the coast and over the dunes. Compare current offers on GetYourGuide .
Where to stay
Guesthouses in the old town keep a German colonial look and leave you close to the sea and to dinner. Ask about sea views, courtyards or gardens and whether breakfast is included. Search options on Booking.com .
Practical notes
- Fog is frequent in the morning and usually thins by midday, so save the open-air plans for later in the day.
- The Atlantic is cold with strong currents, so look but do not swim from the beach at dusk.
- A rental car makes the Walvis Bay legs simpler, and driving is on the left.
