Walking Here Means Going Without a Guide

Central Division has no organised walking-tour company to point you to. The good walks are ones you plan yourself: a half-day loop through central Suva, a seafront promenade, the grounds of the museum and the trails of a forest park. Guided walks come from the rangers at Colo-i-Suva and from a village in Pacific Harbour. Wear a hat, carry water and expect rain, because Suva sits on the wet windward side of Viti Levu. Prices are in Fijian dollars (FJ$).

A Half-Day Loop in Central Suva

The stops below fit together as a loop, and you can take them in whatever order suits the heat of the day.

  1. Suva Municipal Market, where Usher Street meets Rodwell Road. Free to enter, best early, and closed on Sunday.
  2. Victoria Parade, where the Government Buildings clock tower, the Old Town Hall and the Carnegie Library stand.
  3. Albert Park, opposite the Grand Pacific Hotel. The hotel opened in 1914, and a plane called the Southern Cross landed in the park in 1928.
  4. Thurston Gardens, free, with royal palms, water lilies, a bandstand and a clock tower.
  5. The Fiji Museum, on Cakobau Road inside the gardens. It opens 09:00 to 16:30 daily and costs overseas adults FJ$20 and children FJ$10.

Most shops close on Sunday, so the loop works best from Monday to Saturday.

The Seawall on Queen Elizabeth Drive

Locals use the seafront promenade on Queen Elizabeth Drive for exercise. It is a walk for daylight hours. Pair it with the loop above, or use it as a short, flat stretch if you have only an hour.

The Island Tour at Damodar Arts Village

At Pacific Harbour, Damodar Arts Village on Hibiscus Drive runs a heritage walk called the Island Tour. The village reopened in October 2025 and also stages a show with meke and Beqa firewalking. Call +679 229 9049 or ask at reception for the walk’s days, times and price.

Trails in Colo-i-Suva Forest Park

About 20 minutes from central Suva, the park has marked trails with arrows and markers, plus rangers who lead guided walks. The overseas fee is about FJ$5 for an adult, with children at about FJ$1. Do not walk the trails alone or at dusk, and keep to the pools and main path with a ranger if you can. Carry little, and do not resist if someone demands your belongings. The pools by the rope swings are slippery, so wear proper footwear. Heavy rain closed the park in May 2026, so ask whether it is open again before you set off.

Weather and Safety

Cyclone season normally runs from 1 November to 30 April, although cyclones can come at other times, and heavy rain can cause flooding and landslides. In village visits, cover shoulders and knees and take off your hat and sunglasses.
