Two in Trakai: A Romantic Lakeside Break
Two nights is the number. One night in Trakai gives you a rushed castle and a train to catch; two gives you a sunrise balloon, an evening on the lake, and a Sunday concert in a manor ballroom with the water outside the windows. The town of 5,400 all but empties after the last day-trippers leave, and that emptiness is the point.
Arrive late, not early
The coaches from Vilnius land mid-morning and are gone by six. Come in on an afternoon train, 30 to 35 minutes from Vilnius Central for €1.50 to €2.00, and you walk into a town that is already quieting down. The station sits 2.8 to 3.0 km south of the castle, a 30 to 35 minute walk up Vytauto and Karaimų, or a short local ride at roughly €4 to €6 if you are carrying bags.
Around midsummer the light runs up to 17.5 hours, so a 21:00 walk along the lakeside promenade is still golden. In late September the same walk comes with autumn colour reflected off Lake Galvė and almost nobody on it.
Evening one: the castle at the hour nobody photographs
Cross the 300 metre wooden footbridge after 18:00, when the museum has closed and the island is just brickwork and water. You get the Gothic ducal palace, the round barbican towers and the moat with the lake behind them, and no queue at all. The fortress reads as untouched from the shore, though the walls standing today were rebuilt between 1951 and 1962, three centuries after the 1655 war with Muscovy left it in ruins.
Eat afterwards on Karaimų Street. Kibinai are the dish: oven-baked crescents of hand-cut lamb or beef with onion, sealed with a braided seam, traditionally taken with clear chicken broth or cumin tea. Senoji Kibininė at number 65 bakes them to the Karaim recipe recognised by Lithuania’s Culinary Heritage Fund. The Karaim are a Turkic-speaking Jewish community following Karaite Judaism, brought to Trakai from Crimea by Vytautas the Great around 1397; fewer than 200 remain in Lithuania, and this street of three-windowed timber cottages is their quarter.
Morning two: the balloon
An hour over the lakes at sunrise, roughly €150 to €220 a head, ending with a sparkling wine ceremony and a flight certificate. Nothing else here shows you the castle with all 21 islands of Lake Galvė laid out behind it. Balloon flights over Trakai are bookable on GetYourGuide , and ballooning.lt has flown this lake since 1998. Weather scrubs flights often, so put it on your first full morning and keep the second in reserve.
Afternoon two: Užutrakis, and the boat across to it
The Tiškevičius estate sits on the far shore at Užtrakio g. 17, 5 km by road or about 10 minutes on a seasonal shuttle boat across the lake. The 18-hectare park Édouard François André laid out has 20 linked reflecting ponds, marble statues and formal parterres, and it is free and open all year. The Neo-Classical palace interior, with its Louis XVI staterooms and White Ballroom, opens Wednesday to Sunday 11:00 to 19:00. The view back across the water to the Island Castle from this park is the best one in Trakai, better than anything from the ramparts.
Evening two: on the water, in season
Narrated cruises leave the Karaimų Street piers on 30 and 60 minute circuits at €5 to €10 a head, and Mindaugo Laivai has run them for years. Pedal boats, kayaks and paddleboards go by the hour at €10 to €15. All of it is seasonal: the lake freezes solid in January and February, and boating stops from around October or November until April. A winter visit swaps the cruise for skating on the lake in front of the lit towers, which is its own kind of evening.

What is the single most romantic thing to do in Trakai?
Take the sunrise balloon on a clear morning in June or September. An hour in the air over the castle and the 21 islands, then breakfast back in a town that has not woken up yet. If the budget will not stretch, the substitute is the Užutrakis park at dusk, which is free and nearly as good.
Book the balloon and any Sunday concert well ahead, then confirm dates with the Trakai tourism centre before you fix the trip around them. And keep your second evening unplanned: the lakeside terraces stay open past the last train out, and having nowhere to be is most of what you came for.
