Uruguay Romantic Getaways: Summer or Winter
Uruguay is a gentle country for couples rather than a lavish one. The honest list is short: one sunset ritual, one colonial old town, one beach village and some vineyards. What changes the plan is the season.
Summer, December to February
The Ceremonia al Sol at Casapueblo , the whitewashed cliff house at Punta Ballena, takes place daily at sunset. Entry is UYU 600 for adults and the site opens at 10:00. Arrive about 40 minutes early to hold a place on the terrace.
José Ignacio is a low-rise village on the Atlantic coast, and La Huella is its seasonal beach restaurant. Hotels and inns in the village run at full strength in summer, and rates climb, so book well ahead. If you need a bed, you can search Punta del Este and nearby hotels on Booking.com .
Cabo Polonio suits couples who like their romance rustic. The village is off-grid, with no mains electricity or tap water, and the only way in is an open 4x4 truck from the Ruta 10 terminal, UYU 470 return. Expect candles and wind, not room service.
Winter, June to August
Winter is cool, from roughly 8 to 15 degrees, and quiet. Many coastal inns and restaurants close, so make the old towns your base. Colonia del Sacramento is the natural overnight: the Barrio Histórico was listed by UNESCO in 1995, and its cobbled lanes, the Calle de los Suspiros, and the Portón de Campo with its drawbridge look best once the day-trippers leave. The old wooden pier is a calm place for the last light, and the Faro de Colonia lighthouse has a small entry fee.
From July to October, southern right whales pass the coast, and you can watch from shore at Punta del Este, José Ignacio and La Paloma without paying for a boat. The peak is August and September, and nothing is guaranteed.
Wine and a long lunch
Canelones, about 45 minutes north of Montevideo, has family-run wineries that work in any season. Bodega Bouza and Establecimiento Juanicó are separate estates, each with its own bookings. Carmelo, on the Uruguay River, also has wine lodges; contact each lodge directly for current rates.
Getting there as a pair

Money
Hotels charge non-residents 0% VAT with foreign ID. Restaurants cut VAT from 22% to about 13% for card payments until April 2027, and visitors with foreign cards should ask about the further exemption. A “$” on a menu means pesos, at about 40 UYU to US$1.
Verdict
With only two days, take Colonia for the night and Casapueblo for the sunset. Go in summer for the coast and in winter for stillness.
Tip: book Colonia first, then Casapueblo for your last evening, and arrive at the terrace early.
