Rijksmuseum, Moco and Stedelijk Compared
Three major Amsterdam museums sit within a few minutes’ walk of each other around Museumplein, and lumping them into one “book online, no walk-up” rule gets one of the three wrong.
Rijksmuseum: the one exception to online-only
The Rijksmuseum charges EUR 25 adult, free for 18 and under, and opens 9am-5pm every day of the year including holidays. Online booking is strongly recommended, but the museum itself states that a limited number of walk-up tickets remain available at the entrance while stocks last. That is a genuinely different rule from Anne Frank House or the Van Gogh Museum across the square, both of which sell nothing at all at the door. Do not skip online booking on the assumption a walk-up ticket is guaranteed, but do not treat a same-day visit here as automatically impossible either. Moco Museum: cheaper earlier in the day
The Moco Museum, housed in the former Villa Alsberg on Museumplein, runs rotating modern and contemporary shows; online tickets run roughly EUR 17.95-21.95 adult depending on time slot, EUR 13.95-16.95 for ages 13-17, and free under 13. Stedelijk Museum: a major show through January
Modern and contemporary art fills the Stedelijk at EUR 22.50 adult (19+), EUR 10 for students and CJP holders, and free under 19. A major Yayoi Kusama retrospective with a new infinity mirror room runs from 11 September 2026 to 17 January 2027, with a timed-entry surcharge on top of standard admission; anyone visiting in that window should plan around it specifically rather than treat it as a bonus extra. Does the I amsterdam City Card actually pay off here
The classic City Card runs EUR 67 (24h) up to EUR 140 (120h), continuous from first use, and does not include Van Gogh Museum or Anne Frank House either way. It only pencils out on a genuinely museum-heavy, transit-heavy day; a newer Explorer tier lets you pick 3-7 attractions from the same list for less, but carries no public transport at all. Run the actual day’s plan against both before buying either one.
