Athens Sightseeing, Ticket by Ticket
Arriving at the Acropolis without a timed slot is the single most common mistake sightseeing in Athens, and the cap behind it is a real operational limit, not a formality.
The Acropolis
A flat 30 euro, year-round, with no winter discount, and mandatory timed entry booked through the official hhticket.gr . The daily cap sits at 20,000 visitors, with roughly 3,000 tickets released for the 8-9am window and a decreasing allocation across the rest of the day. Peak-season slots sell out 5 to 7 days ahead. The Culture Ministry has also closed the site during extreme summer heat every year since 2023, most recently noon to 5pm on 21-23 July 2026 at 43.5C, so check current conditions before a summer visit. Even in high summer the site itself closes by around 7:30-8pm, so there’s no visiting the ruins after dark; the illuminated Parthenon is best seen from outside, at Lycabettus or Philopappou.
Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Temple of Olympian Zeus
Since the official multi-site combo ticket was discontinued on 1 April 2025, each of these needs its own separate ticket. Private resellers now sell unofficial bundles covering the Acropolis plus these and other sites, at prices genuinely ranging from around 30 to 70 euro depending on inclusions rather than one settled figure.
National Archaeological Museum
The signature collection is Mycenaean: the gold death masks from Grave Circle A, most famously the Mask of Agamemnon, discovered by Schliemann in 1876. Crete’s Heraklion museum, not this one, holds the major Minoan finds.
Plaka and Anafiotika
Plaka’s lanes climb toward Anafiotika, a small Cycladic-style enclave built in the 1840s by workers from the island of Anafi, with narrow whitewashed alleys that look transported from the islands rather than the mainland. It’s free to walk and quieter than Plaka’s busier tourist stretch below it.
Monastiraki Flea Market
The antiques-bazaar side of the market, centered on Avissinias Square, is specifically a Sunday event, roughly 8am to 3pm. General shopping in Monastiraki happens every day, but the collectors’ market is Sunday only.
Panathenaic Stadium
Entry is 10 euro general, 5 euro reduced, current since October 2025, purchased on-site rather than in advance.
