On Foot Along the Han River
Da Nang’s core sights sit close enough together, mostly along the Han River, that the whole downtown circuit is walkable in a single morning or evening without touching a Grab app.
The route: Bach Dang to the Dragon Bridge
Start at the Bach Dang riverside promenade, which runs the length of downtown along the Han’s west bank and is shaded enough for a slow pace even at midday. A short detour inland brings you to Han Market, the covered wholesale-and-retail market that’s been the city’s trading center for generations, worth a pass-through even if you’re not buying anything. Continue north along the promenade to the Museum of Cham Sculpture (60,000 VND admission) at the corner of Bach Dang and 2 Thang 9, holding the largest collection of Champa sandstone art anywhere. From there, it’s a flat 10-to-15-minute walk to the Dragon Bridge, the 666-meter span shaped like a golden dragon, and on to the Han River Swing Bridge, Vietnam’s first swing bridge, which pivots 90 degrees at 23:00 on weekends to let cargo boats through.
Timing it around the fire show
If your walk lands on a Saturday or Sunday evening, plan to be near the Dragon Bridge by 21:00: the dragon’s mouth sends out two rounds of fire followed by water vapor, free to watch from either bank of the river or from a passing cruise boat. Danang’s tourism authority keeps the current schedule and any weather cancellations posted . Arrive fifteen minutes early if you want a spot directly across from the dragon’s head, since the crowd along Tran Hung Dao thickens fast once the show time approaches.
Best hours to walk
Early morning, before about 9:00, or the two hours before sunset are the most comfortable windows; the stretch from 11:00 to 15:00 gets hot enough that the shade along Bach Dang stops being much help. A morning walk also catches Han Market at its most active, before the midday lull. Danang’s tourism authority posts seasonal weather notes worth checking before a longer walk , particularly during the September-to-December typhoon window when a clear morning can turn wet fast.
Extending the walk toward the coast
From the Dragon Bridge, the promenade continues east toward My Khe Beach, another 20 to 25 minutes on foot, if you’d rather end the walk at the water than turn back downtown. This stretch has cafes and seafood stalls the whole way, so there’s no need to plan meal stops in advance.
If you’d rather have a guide
A guided version of this same route, usually run in the morning with a stop for local food along the way, is bookable if commentary matters more to you than a self-paced walk. Da Nang walking and food tours can be compared on Viator . Rooms within walking distance of Bach Dang can be searched on Booking.com , which cuts the whole circuit down to a stroll from your hotel rather than a planned outing.
Wear shoes that handle uneven paving; parts of the Bach Dang promenade near Han Market have broken tiles that catch sandals more than sneakers.
