Blue Curaçao gets its color from a dye, not the orange it is distilled from; the bitter Laraha orange used in the process is actually green, and the workshops at Landhuis Chobolobo will walk you through exactly why that surprises almost everyone who tries it.
Landhuis Chobolobo. Senior & Co’s 19th-century mansion is where the genuine liqueur is made, using sun-dried peels from the bitter Laraha orange. Workshops here cover the distillation process itself, then move into mixology, where you build signature cocktails like the Blue Lagoon or a Curaçao Cosmo under a working bartender’s guidance. Sessions run roughly $25 to $45 and are as much a history lesson in the island’s one globally recognized export as a cocktail class.
Chichi figurine painting. At Serena’s Art Factory in Santa Catharina, you paint your own “Chichi”: the voluptuous, brightly colored ceramic figure that represents the loving elder-sister matriarch figure at the center of Curaçaoan family culture. Local artists lead the sessions, prices run about $35 to $60, and you leave with an actual finished piece rather than a demonstration you only watched.
Krioyo cooking classes. Small-group cooking workshops, usually run out of a local plasa or plantation kitchen, teach the core dishes of Curaçaoan home cooking: stobá, a slow-braised beef or goat stew served with plantains; funchi, the island’s cornmeal polenta; and arepa di pampuna, pumpkin pancakes. This is the workshop category to pick if you want to understand the island’s food rather than just eat it in a restaurant.
Booking and timing notes. None of these are drop-in activities. Chobolobo’s distillery tours and Serena’s painting sessions both run on a schedule, so check ahead rather than showing up expecting an open slot, especially in the middle of a cruise-heavy day when tour groups can fill sessions fast.
What to wear. Cooking classes and distillery tours both involve standing near heat, so leave the sandals for the beach that day and wear closed shoes instead. Painting sessions are messier than they look; a workshop that hands you wet ceramic paint is not the place for clothing you plan to wear again that evening. Bring a bag you do not mind getting a little stained if you are carrying your finished Chichi figurine home in it.
