Hoi An itself has no airport or train station, which turns out to be an advantage for day trips, everything from Cham ruins to an imperial capital sits within a couple of hours by road. My Son Sanctuary: go early
My Son Sanctuary , a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, is a cluster of 4th-13th century Cham Hindu temple ruins about 40km and roughly an hour from Hoi An. Much of it was destroyed during a single week of bombing in August 1969, the craters are still visible, which is why so many structures are partial rather than intact. Da Nang: Marble Mountains and the Golden Bridge
About 30-45 minutes north, Da Nang packs in the Marble Mountains (five marble and limestone hills with caves, pagodas, and a stair climb), Ba Na Hills and its giant stone Golden Bridge, held up by two enormous hands and opened in 2018, plus My Khe Beach and the Dragon Bridge. It’s a manufactured spectacle in places, the cable car up to Ba Na Hills holds a Guinness record, but it’s worth the trip regardless. Hue: the imperial city, if you have a long day to spare
Hue, the former imperial capital, sits about 3-3.5 hours north via the scenic Hai Van Pass. The Complex of Hue Monuments , including the Citadel and the royal tombs, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right, distinct from both Hoi An sites. It’s a long day trip at best, an overnight makes far more sense if your schedule allows it.
Cu Lao Cham: a beach day with better water
The Cham Islands (Cu Lao Cham), a marine UNESCO Biosphere Reserve about an hour offshore by boat, offer snorkeling and clearer water than the mainland beaches. Trips are seasonal and weather-dependent, dry-season months are the safer bet, so check conditions before booking.
Which day trip should first-timers prioritize?
My Son, if you only have time for one. It’s the closest, the most iconic, and the easiest to combine with an early return to town for lunch. Da Nang is the second priority if the Golden Bridge photo matters to you.
Can I do more than one day trip in a single day?
Not comfortably. My Son and Da Nang each deserve a half day to full day on their own, and Hue realistically needs its own day given the drive. Our Hoi An itineraries space these out rather than stacking them.
