4 Real Festivals and Events in Mandalay
Travel advisory: The US advises against all travel to Myanmar. The UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay, and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of Mandalay city. Conflict, drone attacks, curfews and internet cut-offs persist, and the March 2025 earthquake left many of the area’s sites damaged. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Context before the calendar. Myanmar has been under military rule since the 2021 coup, with an ongoing civil war, and most governments currently advise against travel; check your own government’s current guidance before planning around any of this. Under military rule, the ongoing war, and the 28 March 2025 earthquake’s damage to several host sites, festivals here may run smaller, be relocated, or be cancelled outright, verify current-year details rather than assume the traditional calendar holds. Favor small, local, independent operators if and when it’s safe to visit. Official advice currently recommends against travel.
Four festivals are known in Mandalay, all rooted in Burmese Buddhist and folk tradition. Whether each is being held in the current year is unconfirmed.
1. Thingyan (mid-April)
The Burmese New Year water festival, usually falling around 13-16 April, was recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2024. Mandalay has its own version of the tradition, the “Myoma Float” procession at City Hall alongside yein dance troupes, distinct from the citywide water fights seen elsewhere. Verify current-year scale and dates given the wider situation.
2. Thadingyut (September-October)
The Festival of Lights marks the end of Buddhist Lent, with lanterns and candles across the city as the full moon rises. It is a quieter, more contemplative event than Thingyan.
3. The Mahamuni Pagoda Festival
An annual festival centered on Mandalay’s most revered Buddha image. Given that Mahamuni itself sustained confirmed significant structural damage in the 2025 earthquake, verify both the festival’s timing and its scale for the current year, this is one case where the host site’s own condition is directly relevant to whether the event runs as usual.
4. Taungbyone Nat Festival (around August)
Held in Madaya Township just north of Mandalay, in the area where the UK advises against all travel, this is one of Myanmar’s most famous nat, or spirit, festivals, where nat kadaw spirit mediums, a role often held by trans women since the 1980s, dance in ecstatic trance. It’s a vivid, syncretic Buddhist-animist tradition worth covering respectfully rather than as spectacle, and worth verifying current access given Madaya’s position relative to the Sagaing conflict area.
