Mandalay Hiking Areas: The Honest Truth

Read this before searching for trails. Myanmar has been under military rule since the 2021 coup, with an ongoing civil war, and most governments currently advise against travel; check your own government’s current guidance before planning anything. The 28 March 2025 earthquake also hit this whole region, so verify current access at any of the spots below. Favor small, local, independent operators if and when it’s safe to visit. Going, or not going, are both fine calls.
Direct answer: there is no real hiking near Mandalay. The city sits on a flat, dry stretch of the central Irrawaddy plain, not near mountains, and searching for “Mandalay hiking trails” mostly turns up gentle uphill walks to pagodas, not treks. If you specifically want trekking, that’s a Kalaw or Shan State trip, a different part of the country entirely and well beyond a Mandalay day out.
Why there’s no hiking here
Mandalay’s terrain is the reason: it’s built on flat river plain, and the “hills” nearby, Mandalay Hill and Sagaing Hill, are modest, temple-covered rises with paved or covered stairways rather than wilderness trails. There’s no forest reserve, mountain range, or established trail network within day-trip distance of the city itself.
The 3 closest things to a hike
1. Mandalay Hill
A roughly 230-meter climb via four covered, barefoot stairways lined with pagodas and rest points up to Sutaungpyei Pagoda. It’s a genuine uphill walk with a real payoff at the top, city and Irrawaddy views, but it’s a paved pilgrimage route, not a trail.
2. Sagaing Hill
A gentler, similarly temple-dotted climb across the river, with more of a spread-out, exploratory feel than Mandalay Hill. Sagaing sat almost at the 2025 earthquake’s epicenter, with roughly 90% of the city’s structures reported destroyed, so verify current access before you go, this is not a place to assume is business as usual.
3. Anisakan Falls, near Pyin Oo Lwin
About 67km east of Mandalay, in the cooler hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin, a roughly 122-meter waterfall reached by a genuine, if modest, walk down into the gorge. This is the closest thing to an actual hiking trail this guide can honestly point you to, and it’s still a half-day outing rather than a trek.
If you actually want to hike in Myanmar
Look further afield to Kalaw and the wider Shan State, where multi-day trekking between hill villages is a real, established thing. That’s a separate trip from Mandalay, not something to bolt onto a city visit here.
