6 Best Island Day Trips from Phuket

The island itself is a beach base; these 6 trips are why you leave it for a day.
1. Phi Phi Islands
Speedboats leave Rassada Pier (about 1 hour) or the ferry (about 2 hours) for Koh Phi Phi Don and Leh. Maya Bay, of The Beach fame, reopened under permanent rules: boats land at Loh Samah Bay, you wade in knee-deep, visitor numbers cap around 380 at a time, and entry runs about THB 400. 2. Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island
Limestone karsts rise straight out of the water here. James Bond Island, Khao Phing Kan and its Ko Tapu rock spire, got its name from 1974’s The Man with the Golden Gun. 3. Similan Islands
Some of the region’s best diving and snorkeling, but this one is seasonal only, the park closes roughly mid-May to mid-October.
4. Racha and Coral Islands
Closer and easier than Phi Phi: Coral Island (Ko Hae) is about 15 minutes out and geared toward watersports, while Racha Island is about 45 minutes from Ao Chalong Pier and better for snorkeling.
5. Koh Yao Noi
Quieter than any of the above, and honestly better as an overnight escape than a rushed day trip, the pace here is the point.
6. Khao Sok National Park
About 2.5 hours by road, this is the real off-island rainforest trip: Cheow Lan Lake and its floating raft-houses are worth the drive if you want jungle rather than another beach.
An ethical elephant day
If elephants are on the list, book only a no-riding, observation-and-feeding sanctuary, Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is the well-known one, and skip anything offering rides or circus-style shows.
Two closures to build around
Maya Bay closes annually from Aug 1 to Sep 30, and Similan National Park closes roughly May 15 to October 15.
