10 Best Things to Do in Phuket

Phuket packs enough onto one island that the real skill is choosing, not checklisting. Here are the 10 things worth building a trip around, in roughly the order most visitors tackle them.
1. Pick a beach and get to know it
Phuket’s beaches read differently from each other. Patong is the loud nightlife hub around Bangla Road. Kata and Kata Noi suit families and a first swim. Karon is long, wide and quieter. Kamala is smaller and calmer, home to Phuket FantaSea. Surin and Bang Tao lean upscale. Base yourself on one rather than trying to beach-hop the whole 48km coastline. One warning applies to all of them May through October: a red flag means no swimming, monsoon rip currents drown people most years, even on calm-looking days.
2. Watch the sunset from Promthep Cape
The island’s classic sunset spot, at the southern tip near Nai Harn, frames the Andaman Sea against a rocky headland. Arrive early for a spot at the rail.
3. Visit the Big Buddha
The 45m white marble statue on Nakkerd Hill is free to visit, donations welcome, with an enforced dress code. A 2024 landslide closed the access road on and off into early 2026, so confirm current access on a Thai national park portal before you go rather than assuming it’s always open.
4. See Wat Chalong
Phuket’s largest and most revered temple, said to hold a relic of the Buddha. Cover shoulders and knees and remove your shoes, as at any temple here.
5. Wander Phuket Old Town
Thalang Road and Soi Romanee hold the Sino-Portuguese shophouses, and the Sunday-evening Lard Yai walking-street market fills the same streets with food stalls. Phuket has held UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status since 2015, the first ASEAN city to earn it.
6. Day trip to Phi Phi
Maya Bay, of The Beach fame, reopened under permanent rules: boats land at Loh Samah Bay, you wade in knee-deep, and visitor numbers are capped around 380 at a time. It closes annually from Aug 1 to Sep 30, so check current dates before booking. Compare Phi Phi tours on Viator .
7. Day trip to Phang Nga Bay
Limestone karsts, James Bond Island, Khao Phing Kan from 1974’s The Man with the Golden Gun, the stilted village of Koh Panyee, and guided sea-kayaking through tidal cave hongs fill a full day out of Phuket.
8. Snorkel or dive Racha or Coral Island
Racha Island, about 45 minutes from Ao Chalong Pier, and the closer Coral Island both give easy snorkeling without committing a whole day to Phi Phi.
9. Visit an ethical elephant sanctuary
Book only a no-riding, observation-and-feeding sanctuary. Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is the well-known one. Skip anything offering rides or circus-style shows.
10. Hike Khao Phra Thaeo National Park
Phuket’s real on-island trail: the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project plus a roughly 4km path connecting the Bang Pae and Ton Sai waterfalls. Our hiking areas guide has the details, and there’s genuinely no mountain trekking on the island beyond this.
