Johannesburg’s neighborhoods vary more in safety and convenience than most cities, so where you stay shapes the whole trip. Sandton and Rosebank sit on the low-risk, Gautrain-connected side of the city; check your own government’s current travel advisory before you book. Here are the 4 that matter.
1. Sandton

Which is the safer base, Sandton or Rosebank?
Both are genuinely low-risk relative to the rest of the city and both sit on the Gautrain. Sandton has more upscale amenities and business-hotel options; Rosebank is slightly more local and arts-focused. Either works well as a first-timer base.
3. Melville and Maboneng
Bohemian, food-forward, and walkable by day, with more after-dark caution needed than Sandton or Rosebank. Melville’s 44 Stanley complex and Maboneng’s arts scene reward daytime exploring; use Uber rather than walking once the sun goes down.
4. Near OR Tambo
Worth it specifically for an early departure flight, since OR Tambo International, Africa’s busiest airport, can mean a pre-dawn Gautrain or Uber ride otherwise. Not a base for the rest of the trip, just a practical last-night option.
