12 Best Things to Do in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is Slovenia’s small, green, car-free capital on the Ljubljanica river (Slovenia, not Slovakia), and almost everything worth doing sits within a 15 to 20 minute walk of Preseren Square. The center has been closed to private cars since 2007, so a day here is a walking day. Here are twelve things that earn their place, with 2026 prices where there is a ticket to buy.

  1. Ride or walk up to Ljubljana Castle. The glass funicular from Krek Square is 3.30 EUR one-way or 6 EUR return; the marked woodland path takes 10 to 15 minutes and costs nothing. The complex ticket (Time Machine tour, history exhibition, puppet museum, viewing tower) is 15 EUR adult. Book castle and funicular entry ahead to skip the summer queue.

  2. Cross the Triple Bridge. Joze Plecnik’s 1930s reworking of one older stone bridge into three parallel spans, free and always open, part of his UNESCO-listed Ljubljana works.

  3. Find the four dragons on Dragon Bridge. A 1901 bridge, one of Europe’s earliest in reinforced concrete, guarded by bronze dragons tied to the Jason-and-the-Argonauts founding legend. Free.

  4. Stand in Preseren Square. The central plaza, France Preseren’s statue and the pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation anchoring one side.

  5. Browse the Central Market. Plecnik’s riverside colonnade sheltering produce and craft stalls, mornings into early afternoon Monday to Saturday.

  6. Eat at Odprta Kuhna. On fair-weather Fridays from late March to October, the market square becomes an open-air food festival, 65-plus vendors, 10:00 to 22:00, weather permitting.

  7. Order struklji. The national rolled dumpling, sweet or savoury, at Druga Violina, Kratochwill, or the fast-casual Klobasarna.

  8. Spend a morning in Tivoli Park. Roughly 5 square kilometres of green bordering the center, with Plecnik’s Jakopic Promenade among the paths. Free.

  9. Walk through Metelkova after dark. A former army barracks squatted since 1993, covered in street art, with clubs and galleries; free to walk, venues charge their own cover. It earns its keep at night.
