Around 10:15pm, the castle ruin is lit in deep red “Bengal fire” light, followed by a 15-20 minute fireworks display over the Neckar. It’s free to watch, and up to 60,000 spectators line the bridges and the Philosophenweg for the best views. The July date, which falls in school holidays with warmer weather, is typically the most crowded of the three, so book accommodation well ahead if that’s the one you’re targeting.
Heidelberger Herbst (Autumn Festival)
Held around 26-27 September 2026, this is a large free Altstadt street festival drawing an estimated 200,000-plus visitors across the weekend. Expect a crafts and goods market, a flea market, a medieval market, and live music stages spread through the old town’s squares.
Christmas Market (Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt)

Spring and autumn offer the best balance of mild weather and thinner crowds outside event dates. Summer is peak season regardless of the Castle Illumination, hot and the most crowded time to visit; the illumination nights simply add a spike on top of an already busy season. Winter is quiet and cold, but the Christmas market compensates for both.
Do I need tickets for the Castle Illumination?
No. It’s free to watch from public vantage points along the river, bridges, and the Philosophenweg. What you do need to book ahead is accommodation, since Heidelberg’s hotels fill up fast around illumination nights, especially the July date.
