Best Places to Stay in Heidelberg
Heidelberg’s Hauptbahnhof sits roughly 2km west of the Altstadt, so where you base yourself matters more than usual for a compact city. Four areas cover most visitors’ needs: the Altstadt for walkability, Bergheim for a practical station-adjacent base, Neuenheim for a quieter across-the-river stay, and Bahnstadt for something modern.
Altstadt: the tourist heart
The Altstadt puts the castle, Old Bridge, Marktplatz, and Hauptstrasse all within walking distance, with the highest concentration of hotels and restaurants in the city. The trade-off is noise and price, especially near the Marktplatz on weekends and Castle Illumination nights. Hotel Zum Ritter St. Georg, the 1592 Renaissance building on the Marktplatz built by Huguenot cloth merchant Charles Bélier, is one of the very few Heidelberg buildings to survive the 1689-93 French destruction, and it still operates as a hotel and restaurant today. Hotel Europäischer Hof, opened in 1865 originally to host guests for castle festivities, has been family-run since 1906 and remains one of Germany’s grand historic hotels.
Bergheim: practical and station-close
Immediately west of the Altstadt, between the old town and the Hauptbahnhof, Bergheim is the commercial-hub choice: offices, cafes, and restaurants, walking distance to the old town, and the closest area to the station for late arrivals or early departures. It’s a solid budget-conscious base without sacrificing much walkability.
Neuenheim and Handschuhsheim: quieter, across the river
Across the Neckar on the north bank, Neuenheim and Handschuhsheim are leafy and residential, near the base of the Philosophenweg, and noticeably quieter than the Altstadt. A short bridge walk or bus ride gets you back into the center. Good for families or anyone who wants a calmer stay while still being close.
Bahnstadt: modern and purpose-built
Built on former freight-yard land, Bahnstadt is one of the world’s largest Passivhaus (low-energy-standard) developments, spanning 116 hectares with everything from housing to the cinema built to passive-house efficiency. It’s a genuinely different, less atmospheric base than the old town, but a practical modern option.
Booking around Castle Illumination and events
If your trip lines up with a Castle Illumination date or the Heidelberger Herbst, book well ahead. Hotels across all four areas fill up fast around these dates, especially in the Altstadt.
How far is the Hauptbahnhof from the Altstadt?
About 2km, not walking distance for most visitors, especially with luggage. Budget a short bus or tram ride, or the roughly 5-minute regional rail hop if you’re already on a train, rather than assuming you can walk straight from the station to the castle.
