Xi'an: Festivals and Events 2026
Most of the year, Xi’an’s two Golden Weeks (Chinese New Year and National Day) are the weeks to avoid, since domestic travel crowds every major sight and spikes hotel prices. One event flips that advice.
Xi’an City Wall Lantern Festival
Running since 1984 during the Spring Festival season, this is the headline winter event and the genuine exception to “avoid Chinese New Year.” The 13.7km wall is strung with elaborate lit displays, including large zodiac-themed lantern sculptures marking the coming lunar year, and walking or biking the loop after dark during the festival is a different experience from the daytime version most visitors get. Expect lion and dragon dance performances near the gates, Sichuan-style face-changing opera, and lantern-making stalls where you can try the craft yourself rather than just walk past it. Chinese New Year falls on 17 February 2026, so plan around that date if this is the draw.
Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao Jie)
Falling on the 15th day of the first lunar month, this marks the close of the wider Chinese New Year season with lanterns, sticky rice ball soup (yuanxiao), and family gatherings across the city, overlapping with the City Wall’s own lantern display.
Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping Day)
A national holiday in early April, honoring ancestors through tomb-sweeping and offerings. Xi’an has no unique local angle on Qingming beyond the general Chinese observance, but expect some domestic travel around it.
Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhongqiu Jie)
Held on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, usually September, this harvest festival brings mooncakes and family reunions; locals gather at the City Wall and other scenic spots to watch the full moon.
Hanfu Culture, Year-Round
Not tied to a single date, Tang-dynasty costume photography is a mainstream, ongoing scene rather than a festival, concentrated around the City Wall, Datang Everbright City, and Tang Paradise. Rental shops near these spots dress visitors and locals alike in full hanfu for an afternoon or evening of photos against Tang-era backdrops, and it runs every week of the year regardless of season, so any visit doubles as a chance to see it.
Avoid These Two Weeks
Chinese New Year (17 Feb 2026) and National Day Golden Week (Oct 1-7 2026) both spike hotel prices and mob the Terracotta Army and City Wall. Book well outside these dates unless the Lantern Festival is specifically the draw.
