Mecca Pilgrimage Guide: Hajj and Umrah

Non-Muslims cannot enter Mecca. It is a legal restriction enforced at checkpoints on every approach road, not a custom that can be worked around, and the same bar applies to Medina’s central Haram. What follows is pilgrimage guidance for Muslim travellers performing Umrah or Hajj, not a leisure-tourism guide to a normal city.
Mecca (Makkah al-Mukarramah) is Islam’s holiest city, home to the Masjid al-Haram and the Kaaba, the qibla toward which the world’s Muslims pray. Riyadh, not Mecca, is Saudi Arabia’s capital. Pilgrims arrive year-round for Umrah, the shorter pilgrimage completed in hours, and once a year for Hajj, the obligatory pilgrimage fixed to the Islamic calendar. Both are arranged through Nusuk , the official Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah platform, and both require planning well before you leave home.
Umrah versus Hajj
Umrah is available almost any time of year and consists of a compact set of rites: entering ihram, tawaf around the Kaaba, sa’i between Safa and Marwa, then halq or taqsir to close the state of ihram. A first-time pilgrim can complete the core rites in a few hours, though most build in a day or two either side for rest and repeat visits to the Grand Mosque.
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime for any Muslim who is physically and financially able. It falls across 8 to 13 Dhu al-Hijjah, which in 2026 lands around 25 to 30 May (verify closer to the date, since moon sighting can shift it by a day). Hajj moves through Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifah, and the Jamarat, and the standing vigil at Arafat on the 9th is the one rite without which Hajj is not valid.

Getting there and the visa
Most pilgrims fly into Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED), which has a dedicated Hajj Terminal, then travel the roughly 70km to Mecca by car or on the Haramain High-Speed Railway. Medina (MED) is the second common gateway, since pairing Mecca with the Prophet’s Mosque is standard practice. A Hajj visa is only issued through an approved operator or the Nusuk Hajj portal, as part of a full package; Umrah is arranged through Nusuk directly, or via the Saudi tourist e-visa outside Hajj season, though a Nusuk Umrah permit is still required to enter the Grand Mosque itself. A MenACWY meningitis vaccination certificate is mandatory for every pilgrim, and it needs to be arranged well ahead of travel.
Can non-Muslims visit Mecca?
No. The restriction is legal, not informal: signage on the approach roads directs non-Muslims away before the Haram boundary, and police checkpoints check identification. Non-Muslims can reach the outskirts, such as the coach terminal, but not the city itself.
Do I need a mahram to perform Hajj or Umrah as a woman?
Saudi Arabia dropped the requirement for a male guardian (mahram) for women’s Hajj and Umrah around 2021, and that remains the rule in 2026. Some home countries or tour operators still add their own conditions, commonly an age threshold or a requirement to travel within an organised group, so check both the Saudi rule and your own country’s before booking.
Where to stay
Hotels in Mecca are chosen by distance to the Masjid al-Haram above almost everything else. One concrete tip: confirm your Nusuk registration and meningitis certificate before you book flights. Both are hard requirements to enter the Grand Mosque, and neither can be sorted at the airport.
