7 Nature Spots Around Hoi An, Vietnam

Hoi An’s nature is flat, coastal, and riverine, not mountainous, so don’t come expecting dramatic scenery beyond the town itself. What it does have is a real beach, a working herb village, water-coconut waterways, and an island reserve with genuinely good snorkeling. These 7 spots are the honest version of Hoi An’s outdoors. See our Hoi An day trips guide for how the farther ones fit into a longer visit.
An Bang Beach
The closer and more developed of Hoi An’s two beaches, An Bang has calmer water and a strip of beach bars, good for a half-day out from the Ancient Town without committing to a full day trip.
Cua Dai Beach
At the mouth of the Thu Bon River, Cua Dai has suffered real coastal erosion in recent years, so check current conditions before planning a full beach day here rather than assuming it matches older photos.
Tra Que Herb Village
A roughly 400-year-old farming community fertilized by riverweed rather than chemical fertilizer, Tra Que is genuinely still farmed, not just staged for tourists, and it combines naturally with a bike ride and a cooking class.
Cam Thanh: the water-coconut village
Cam Thanh’s palm-lined waterways are toured by round basket boat (thung chai), but be aware the popular version can feel like a boat traffic jam, complete with a spinning “dance” invented purely for photos, with no real local tradition behind it. Ask about a quieter, less-crowded departure time for a calmer version of the same ride. Book a basket-boat experience if you’d rather arrange it ahead of time.
Cycling the rice paddies
Renting a bike and riding the back lanes through rice paddies outside town is free, low-effort, and arguably the best way to see rural Quang Nam without booking anything at all.
Sunrise on the Thu Bon River
The river that runs through the middle of Hoi An is worth a dedicated early boat trip on its own, past the town’s ancient architecture in soft morning light before the day-trip crowds and heat arrive.
Cu Lao Cham (the Cham Islands)
A marine UNESCO Biosphere Reserve about an hour offshore by boat, Cu Lao Cham has clearer water and better snorkeling than anything on the mainland, though trips are seasonal and weather-dependent. Check Cu Lao Cham boat trips before committing to a date.
Is there real hiking near Hoi An?
Not really, the area is flat and coastal. See our hiking areas guide for an honest breakdown of the nearest actual climbs, which are outside Hoi An entirely.
Which nature spot is worth prioritizing on a short trip?
An Bang Beach and Tra Que Village both pair easily with a half day in the Ancient Town, no full day trip required. Cu Lao Cham is the one to save for a trip of 5 days or more, given the boat time involved.
