Nature Spots Around Your Melbourne Base
One free garden in the city, and six genuinely different landscapes within a few hours of it: that’s the honest shape of nature around a Melbourne base.
Royal Botanic Gardens, the in-city option
Free and easily walkable, the Royal Botanic Gardens are the obvious choice on a day when a full day trip isn’t in the plan, and a genuinely relaxed way to spend an hour or two between other city sightseeing.
Great Ocean Road, coastal cliffs and koalas
The marquee nature trip, 3-4 hours one way to the Twelve Apostles limestone stacks and the cliffs of Loch Ard Gorge, with koalas at Kennett River along the way. Doing it in a single day is a genuine 12-hour rush, so two days and one night is the better way to actually take it in.
Yarra Valley, wine country and wildlife
About 1 hour 15 minutes out, the Yarra Valley pairs its wine country landscape with Healesville Sanctuary’s native wildlife nearby, a true day trip that doesn’t need to feel rushed.
Phillip Island, penguins at dusk
The little penguins come ashore on Phillip Island at dusk, meaning a genuinely late return to Melbourne. Go by car or guided tour, since the public bus network doesn’t reach the parade grounds, and book the roughly AUD $33 tickets ahead since they sell out.
Dandenong Ranges, forested and easy
About an hour out and reachable by Metro train to Belgrave, the forested Dandenong Ranges are the easiest nature day trip on this list, with the heritage Puffing Billy steam train running through them.
Mornington Peninsula, coast and hot springs
About 1 to 1.5 hours south, Peninsula Hot Springs and coastal bushland trails make for a day trip or an overnight in Sorrento or Portsea, a different coastal mood from the Great Ocean Road entirely.
Grampians (Gariwerd), the mountain range
At 2.5-3 hours, the Grampians are too far for a comfortable single day. An overnight in Halls Gap is the better way to see this mountain range properly.

One concrete tip: if you only have time for one nature day trip, Yarra Valley packs wine, wildlife and an easy drive into a single unrushed day better than any of the others on this list.
