9 Best Photo Spots in Colombo

1. Jami-Ul-Alfar (Red Mosque)
The candy-striped red-and-white facade, built in 1908-09, is one of the most photographed buildings in Pettah. Shoot from across the street for the full pattern; dress respectfully and skip prayer times.
2. Galle Face Green at sunset
The 5-8pm window turns the promenade into an open-air street-food scene, with kite-flying silhouettes against the ocean. Remember this is a lawn, not a beach, so the shots are all promenade and skyline, not sand.
3. Colombo Lotus Tower
The observation deck sits around the 29th floor, roughly 244m up, and gives a genuine 360-degree view of the city, best at sunset or after dark when it’s lit up. Foreign entry runs about $20.
4. Seema Malaka on Beira Lake
Gangaramaya’s pavilions appear to float on the lake, a striking Geoffrey Bawa composition (a 1976 rebuild, not an ancient original) that photographs especially well in early morning light before crowds arrive.
5. Old Dutch Hospital, Fort
The restored 17th-century arches and courtyards make a strong architecture frame, especially in the softer light of late afternoon before the dinner crowd fills the restaurants.
6. Pettah Market
For street photography: Sea Street’s gold traders, produce stalls, and the general chaos of the bazaar. Go in the morning for the best light and the most active trading.
7. Independence Memorial Hall
The 60-column hall, completed in 1953, echoes the Kandyan kings’ Audience Hall design and photographs cleanly against its open square, especially with few people around early in the day.
8. Marine Drive
The roughly 7.4km coastal road from Kollupitiya to Dehiwala is a good sunset drive-or-walk for skyline and ocean shots without Galle Face Green’s crowds.
9. Mount Lavinia
The closest genuine beach, about 10km south, with the 1805 Mount Lavinia Hotel as a colonial-era backdrop and reliable sunrise light over open water.
