8 Best Places to Stay in Colombo

Since Colombo is honestly a 1-2 day city, where you stay matters less than in a longer-stay destination, but the postal-district system (Colombo 1, 2, 3, and so on) is genuinely how locals and hotels describe location, so it’s worth knowing before you book.
Kollupitiya (Colombo 3)
The upscale core: Galle Face Green, malls, and embassies all within walking distance. Expect $150+ for a genuine luxury stay here, and it’s the easiest base if you don’t want to think about transport at all.
Fort (Colombo 1)
The colonial heart of the city, close to the Old Dutch Hospital dining precinct and the start of the coastal train to Galle. A good pick if the train and the historic core matter more to you than the beach.
Kompanna Veediya (Colombo 2)
Officially renamed from “Slave Island” in 2023, this ex-slave-holding site is now dominated by luxury towers and malls. Worth knowing the current name if a hotel search or map still uses the old one.
Bambalapitiya (Colombo 4)
Coastal, with Galle Rd shopping close by, and generally $60-120 mid-range without Kollupitiya’s premium. A reasonable middle ground for a short visit.
Wellawatte (Colombo 6)
Dense and lively, with a sizeable Tamil community, a beach nearby, and a strong textile-shopping scene. Good value, less polished than Kollupitiya.
Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7)
Leafy and old-money, home to the National Museum and Viharamahadevi Park. Quieter at night, with fewer restaurants right outside the door than Kollupitiya or Bambalapitiya.
Mount Lavinia
About 10km south, this is the beach-town option: the closest genuine swimming beach, anchored by the 1805 Mount Lavinia Hotel. Worth it if you want a coastal stay over a city one, at the cost of a longer commute into Fort or Pettah.
Budget hostels near Kollupitiya or Fort
Dorm beds and simple private rooms run on the low end of the $25-40 daily budget range, generally clustered near Kollupitiya and Fort where the walkable sights are.
Booking notes
Rooms fill up first in the December-March dry season. Check current rates before you commit to a neighborhood, and verify the exchange rate on any LKR-quoted price since the rupee has moved from around 310/USD in January 2026 to roughly 335/USD by August.
