Best Nature Spots From a Memphis Base
Memphis’s downtown core is compact, but its parks are not: Shelby Farms alone is nearly five times the size of Central Park, and the Mid-South day trips add a genuinely different kind of outdoor time once you’re outside the city limits.
Shelby Farms Park
At 4,500 acres, Shelby Farms is one of the largest urban parks in the US, in East Memphis with 40-plus miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, plus lakes and open meadow. It’s the single best full-morning or afternoon outdoor block the city itself offers.
Overton Park
A 342-acre Midtown park with walking trails and open lawn, home to the Overton Park Shell bandshell and within walking distance of Cooper-Young. Good for an hour or two rather than a full day, and easy to fold into a city-core morning.
Memphis Botanic Garden
In East Memphis, directly across from the Dixon Gallery & Gardens, this is a formal, cultivated space rather than a wild one, worth an hour if gardens are more your pace than trails.
The Mississippi riverfront
Big River Crossing, the free roughly 1-mile pedestrian bridge from downtown Memphis, puts you over the Mississippi on foot, with river views the city’s landlocked parks can’t match. It lands you in West Memphis, Arkansas, a second state reached without a car.
Once you’re out of the city
Shiloh National Military Park (2-2.3 hours east) pairs its Civil War history with a genuinely scenic, well-preserved battlefield landscape worth walking rather than just driving through; the interpretive center sits at the trailhead for several of the best-marked routes. Tunica RiverPark (30-45 minutes south) sits directly on the Mississippi and makes an easy outdoor stop if you’re already headed that way for the casinos, with river-level walking paths that most day-trippers skip entirely in favor of the gaming floors.
Timing it right
Spring (April-early June) and fall (mid-September-early November) are the best windows for all of this, dodging both summer’s heat and humidity and spring’s real tornado and severe-storm risk; a weather-radar app is worth keeping open during storm season regardless of which park you’re headed to. Shelby Farms and Overton Park both stay pleasant into the evening in summer if you plan around the hottest midday hours, while Shiloh’s open battlefield offers little shade, so an early start matters more there than anywhere else on this list.
