Best Photo Spots in Tallinn
Tallinn is one of the easier cities in Europe to photograph well, mostly because its best shot is free and takes ten minutes to reach. Here are the spots worth building a morning around, roughly in the order you would walk them.
Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewpoints
The postcard shot, and it costs nothing. The Kohtuotsa platform on Toompea hill frames the Lower Town’s red roofs, church spires and city walls in one clean sweep; Patkuli nearby gives a slightly different angle over the towers. Get there early, before the cruise crowds arrive mid-morning, and again near sunset for warmer light.
St Olaf’s tower
For height, climb St Olaf’s Church tower, a tight spiral to about 60 metres for a few euros. It puts you above the rooftops for a top-down view you cannot get from the free platforms. Daytime for clarity, though the stairs are narrow and one-way in places.
The city walls and Raekoja plats
The medieval walls and towers photograph best in early morning or the low light of evening, when the stone warms up and the crowds thin. Down in the Lower Town, Raekoja plats gives you the Gothic Town Hall and the ring of merchant houses, best mid-morning when the square is lit but not yet packed.
Kalamaja and Telliskivi
For colour and texture rather than skyline, head to Kalamaja’s streets of painted wooden houses, then Telliskivi Creative City next door for street art and industrial backdrops. It is a completely different palette from the Old Town, and far less photographed.
Pirita and the coast
If you want water and sky, the Pirita seafront about 15 minutes out gives you the city skyline across the bay, strong at sunset. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on Toompea, with its 1900 Russian Orthodox domes, is the other set-piece up top, best shot straight on from the square in front.
A note on light
Summer gives you very long golden hours near midsummer; winter trades daylight for atmospheric low sun and floodlit stone. Either works, just plan around the short winter afternoons.
