Stay near Antwerpen-Centraal
For a day-trip trip, this is the clear winner. Hotels cluster two to seven minutes from the platforms around De Keyserlei, so each morning is a short walk with your bag rather than a tram transfer across town. It is also the cheaper area on average and close to the Diamond District. One honest note: the streets directly north of the station are best skipped after dark, so keep to the lit main routes; the core stays fine.
Or the historic centre, with a tradeoff
If you would rather wake up among the sights, the old town around the Grote Markt and cathedral is more atmospheric and walkable to everything in the city. The tradeoff is a short tram or 20-minute walk to Centraal each morning before your train, which adds up over a week of early departures.
Why the station base wins for day trips
Every trip on the day-trip network runs from Antwerpen-Centraal on SNCB trains. The busiest routes (Brussels, Mechelen) run every 15 minutes or better, so a station-adjacent room means you can wing the timetable rather than plan around it. The longer trips (Bruges, the coast, Lille) reward an early start, which is far easier from a room by the platforms.
