Where to Stay in Lucerne, Switzerland
Where you stay in Lucerne mostly comes down to how much you want to walk versus how much lake view you want from your window.
Old Town (Altstadt)
The historic core, right by the Chapel Bridge, the Musegg Wall, and the guild houses of the landmark squares. Most walkable, most atmospheric, and the most touristed and priciest option, best for first-timers who want everything within a short stroll.
Station and KKL, the lakefront strip
Haldenstrasse, near the Bahnhof and Jean Nouvel’s KKL, is Lucerne’s grand hotel row. The Grand Hotel National, open since 1870 and now under Mandarin Oriental management, and the Hotel Schweizerhof, both historic lakeside properties, sit here with genuine Alp and lake views, a short walk from the center.
Château Gütsch, the splurge pick
A 19th-century castle-hotel on a hill above the city, reached by funicular, with 27 rooms and private-terrace views over the lake and city. This is an atmosphere-first choice, not a walkable-to-everything base.
Left bank and Pilatusstrasse, for value
South of the station, less postcard-pretty but generally better value, still a short walk to the Old Town, a solid pick if a lake view isn’t the priority.
Short-term rentals, an alternative to a hotel room
For longer stays, or a group traveling together, a short-term rental apartment is a genuine alternative to a hotel room here, and one way to soften Switzerland’s high nightly rates over several nights by cooking a few meals in rather than eating out every time. Look in the Old Town for atmosphere or the left bank for value, the same area trade-offs above still apply.
