9 Essential Riyadh Travel Tips

Read this before you book anything else. Saudi Arabia is under a US State Department Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory over Iranian and Houthi drone and missile risk from the regional conflict active since February 2026, and the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh Province, plus all travel within 10km of the Yemen border. No strike has been confirmed inside Riyadh city itself, and flights through King Khalid International can be disrupted, so check with your airline. These are the nine practical tips worth sorting out before you land, in roughly the order you’ll need them.

1. Check the current advisory before you book flights

Both the US and UK have updated their guidance for Riyadh in 2026 given the Iran-Houthi conflict. Read them in full, then decide with current information rather than an old blog post, this one included.

2. Apply for the eVisa through the official portal only

Foreign nationals from roughly 66 eligible countries apply through visa.visitsaudi.com exclusively, for around SAR 535 (about $143), which includes mandatory insurance and gets you a 1-year, multiple-entry visa with 90-day stays. Your passport needs 6+ months’ validity. An Umrah visa is a separate category, not a substitute if you’re visiting Riyadh for tourism.

3. Know your money: SAR, pegged to the dollar

The Saudi Riyal (SAR) has been pegged at 3.75 to 1 USD since 1986, so currency swings aren’t a factor. Cards work almost everywhere in Riyadh; keep some cash for souqs and taxis.

4. Land at RUH, about 35km from the center

King Khalid International Airport (RUH) sits roughly 35km north of downtown; a taxi runs about SAR 70 and takes 30-45 minutes depending on traffic.

5. Use the Metro, it’s new and it works

The Riyadh Metro opened in phases between December 2024 and January 2025, 6 driverless lines, 85 stations, fares from SAR 4 via the Darb app. The Blue Line (Line 1) covers the tourist spine along King Fahd Road; the Yellow Line (Line 4) links the airport to KAFD. For Diriyah or any desert trip, you’ll need Careem, Uber, or a private driver instead.

6. Go November through March if you can

7. Build slack around prayer times

Reforms have relaxed prayer-time closures at most modern malls and chains, but smaller shops, souqs, and Friday midday Jummah (roughly 11:30-13:30) can still pause. Asr (roughly 15:00-15:45) tends to land in the middle of prime sightseeing hours, so don’t overpack your afternoon schedule.

This is the single most non-obvious risk for an otherwise law-abiding tourist, explicitly named in the US advisory. Saudi cybercrime law has jailed visitors over social-media posts, including posts made before arrival, from abroad, or later deleted. Delete anything sensitive or critical before you travel, and don’t post, share, or like controversial content while you’re in the country.

9. Know that alcohol is fully banned, no workaround

There’s no tourist exception, not even in hotel rooms; possession or consumption carries real penalties including fines, deportation, and jail.
