A Venice Weekend: 2-Day Plan
A weekend is enough for a first taste of Venice if you stop trying to see everything. This plan keeps to two unhurried days: the marquee square on the first, the market and a lagoon island on the second, with room to get pleasantly lost in between.
Day 1: San Marco, slowly
Start early in Piazza San Marco while it is still calm. Go into St Mark’s Basilica on a free timed slot (dress for it: shoulders and knees covered), then take your time in the Doge’s Palace next door, about EUR30 to 35, where a thousand years of the Republic play out across the council chambers. Ride the lift up the Campanile (about EUR10) for the rooftop view. Break for a long cicchetti lunch at a bacaro, then spend the afternoon simply walking, letting the calli lead you toward the Riva degli Schiavoni as the crowds thin.
Tip: book the Basilica slot and the Doge’s Palace the night before, so your slow morning is not spent in a queue.
Day 2: the Rialto and a lagoon island
Walk to the Rialto market first thing, before 9am, while the fish and produce halls are still busy (Tuesday to Saturday). Cross the bridge for the classic Grand Canal view, then decide the gondola question for yourself: the fixed rate is EUR90 for 30 minutes, or ride a traghetto straight across the canal for about EUR2. In the afternoon, take the vaporetto from Fondamente Nove out to Murano for a glassblowing demonstration, a gentle half-day that gets you onto the lagoon without a rush. Head back for a last dinner in quiet Cannaregio.
Tip: buy a 24-hour vaporetto pass (about EUR25) at the start of day 2; with the Rialto and Murano on the plan it pays for itself.
Where to stay and what to know
Base yourself in Cannaregio or Dorsoduro for a calmer evening once the day trippers leave. Venice has no cars, so pack light for the bridges. If your dates fall on one of the roughly 29 tagged access-fee days (April 3 to July 26, 2026), staying overnight means you skip the fee, though you still need a free QR voucher.
