5 Gentle Days in Venice
Five days lets Venice unwind completely. This plan covers the essentials at an easy pace and saves the last day for Castello, the quietest quarter, so you leave feeling like you lived here rather than ticked a list.
Day 1: San Marco
Piazza San Marco early: the Basilica on a free timed slot (dress code enforced), the Doge’s Palace next door (about EUR30 to 35), the Campanile lift (about EUR10). Long cicchetti lunch, then an aimless afternoon walk.
Tip: reserve the Basilica and palace online the night before to avoid the peak queues.
Day 2: the Rialto and San Polo
Rialto market before 9am, the bridge for the canal view, San Polo’s lanes and the Frari church. Afternoon: the gondola (EUR90 fixed, 30 minutes) or a EUR2 traghetto. Dinner off the tourist strip.
Tip: eat where the menu is handwritten and the prices are posted outside; skip the photo menus.
Day 3: the lagoon islands
A full, unhurried day from Fondamente Nove: Murano, Burano, Torcello, all exempt from the access fee.
Tip: pack a picnic or eat early on Burano, where lunch spots fill fast at midday.
Day 4: Cannaregio and Dorsoduro
Cannaregio and the Jewish Ghetto (1516) in the morning, then Dorsoduro. Pick one of the Accademia or the Peggy Guggenheim, and finish on the Zattere at sunset.
Tip: the Zattere faces west, so it is the reliable sunset spot on this whole itinerary.
Day 5: Castello, slow
Spend the last day in Castello, the largest and least touristed sestiere: the Arsenale, the Biennale gardens, and Via Garibaldi for a real neighbourhood lunch. Add a short hop to San Giorgio Maggiore for a campanile view back at San Marco, or the Doge’s Palace Secret Itineraries tour (around EUR67, book ahead).
Tip: book the Secret Itineraries tour the moment your dates are fixed; it is the hardest slot here to recover if it sells out.
Where to stay and what to know
Castello or Dorsoduro both suit five days. A 7-day vaporetto pass (about EUR65, verify on site) is the sensible buy once the island day is in. No cars, so pack for the bridges; overnight guests are exempt from the access fee.
