A Slow Week in Venice
A week is long enough to stop being a tourist and start having a routine. This plan covers everything on the shorter itineraries at a genuinely slow pace, then leaves the last morning open to revisit whatever you loved.
Day 1: San Marco
The Basilica on a free timed slot (dress code enforced), the Doge’s Palace (about EUR30 to 35), the Campanile lift (about EUR10), a long lunch, and a wander to finish.
Tip: reserve the Basilica and palace the night before to skip the queues.
Day 2: the Rialto and San Polo
Rialto market before 9am, the bridge, San Polo and the Frari. Afternoon gondola (EUR90 fixed) or a EUR2 traghetto.
Tip: cross on the traghetto first for a two-minute taste before deciding on a full gondola ride.
Day 3: the lagoon islands
Murano, Burano and Torcello from Fondamente Nove, all exempt from the access fee.
Tip: Torcello rewards the extra hop with the lagoon’s oldest cathedral and its quiet.
Day 4: Cannaregio and Dorsoduro
The Ghetto (1516) and Strada Nova in the morning, one Dorsoduro gallery after lunch, the Zattere at sunset.
Tip: a spritz on the Zattere at golden hour is the cheapest good hour of the week.
Day 5: Castello
The Arsenale, the Biennale gardens, Via Garibaldi, and San Giorgio Maggiore for the view. Add the Secret Itineraries tour (around EUR67) if you want the palace in depth.
Tip: eat lunch on Via Garibaldi, where prices are a world away from San Marco.
Day 6: the Lido
The vaporetto to the Lido for a bike, a swim and a slow beach lunch, the one day you are not entirely on foot or boat.
Tip: ride south toward Malamocco for a quiet fishing village most visitors never see.
Day 7: a free last morning
No new sights. Go back to the sestiere you liked best, pick up any Murano glass or Burano lace you skipped, and take a last slow coffee before your transfer.
Tip: allow extra time to the station or airport, since luggage over the bridges always takes longer than you expect.
Where to stay and what to know
Castello or Dorsoduro both hold up over a week. A 7-day vaporetto pass (about EUR65, verify on site) is the obvious buy. No cars, so pack for the bridges; overnight guests are exempt from the access fee.
