7 Days in Almaty: First-Timer Plan

Seven days is the full version: two city days, an easy mountain day at Medeu and Shymbulak, a nature day, a full day out to Charyn Canyon, and an overnight out to Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes to close. This treats Almaty properly as a Tian Shan base rather than a museum city. It builds on the 6-day itinerary ; with less time, drop either the canyon day or the lakes overnight and use the 5-day itinerary or 6-day itinerary instead.

Book these before you go

Day 1: Panfilov Park to Kok-Tobe

Morning

Start at Panfilov Park, home to the WWII Memorial of Glory, the eternal flame, and the Zenkov (Ascension) Cathedral, a roughly 56m wooden Russian Orthodox cathedral built in 1907 without a single nail.

Afternoon

Walk to the Green Bazaar: three floors of dried fruit, spices, horse meat and kazy sausage, kurt (dried salted cheese), and Koryo-saram vendors selling morkovcha carrot salad. Then walk the Arbat (Zhibek Zholy).

Evening

Try beshbarmak, the national dish of boiled meat (traditionally horse) over wide noodles, then ride Kok-Tobe’s cable car up for sunset.

Day 2: Republic Square and museums

Morning

Head to Republic Square and the Independence Monument, then the Central State Museum next door (the Golden Man replica, closed Tuesdays, verify).

Afternoon

Add the Kasteyev State Museum of Arts (closed Mondays), the Central Mosque (modest dress), and First President’s Park.

Evening

An early dinner ahead of day three’s bus ride out to the mountains.

Day 3: Medeu and Shymbulak

Morning

Take bus 12 to Medeu, the high-altitude outdoor ice rink at roughly 1,691m, with the anti-mudflow dam staircase alongside it.

Afternoon

Ride the gondola up to Shymbulak, open year-round for the views (roughly $10-25 round trip, tiered, verify). The ride up takes about 25-30 minutes base to summit.

Evening

Back to Almaty for dinner and an early night ahead of a longer day four.

Day 4: A Tian Shan nature day

Morning

Kok-Zhailyau, a roughly 10km alpine meadow hike (2.5-4 hours, best May-October), starts near the city limits with no long transfer needed.

Afternoon

If you’d rather do Big Almaty Lake instead, verify current access first: it’s a working drinking-water reservoir with swimming banned, sits near a border zone with occasional checkpoints, and the road has had fire-season closures.

Evening

Rest up; day five is a long one out to the canyon.

Day 5: Charyn Canyon

Morning

Charyn Canyon, the “Valley of Castles,” sits roughly 200km and 3-3.5 hours from Almaty, one way, so this is a full day, usually 10-12 hours round trip. Most visitors join a tour rather than self-drive.

Afternoon

Walk the red-rock canyon floor and take in the eroded formations that give the “castles” their name. Bring water and sun protection.

Evening

Back in Almaty by evening. Pack tonight for two nights, since tomorrow starts the drive to Kolsai and Kaindy.

Day 6: Kolsai Lakes

Morning

Drive roughly 300km, 4-6 hours, to Kolsai Lakes, a chain of alpine lakes. Most visitors go with a booked tour rather than self-drive, given the distance and the road conditions past Saty.

Afternoon

Walk along the lakeshore and take in the alpine scenery; this is the part of the trip that justifies the long drive out.

Evening

Overnight in Saty, the gateway village; this is the honest way to do Kolsai, not a rushed same-day round trip.

Day 7: Kaindy Lake and return

Morning

A short drive from Saty reaches Kaindy Lake, the “sunken forest,” an eerie turquoise lake with drowned spruce trunks rising straight out of the water.

Afternoon

Begin the drive back to Almaty; budget the full afternoon and into the evening for the return trip.

Evening

Arrive back in Almaty for a farewell dinner and a last stop for Rakhat chocolate to take home.

Getting around and where to stay

Base yourself near the Green Bazaar or the Arbat for days one through four; days five through seven run as booked tours rather than self-arranged transport, given the distances involved. Yandex Go, not Uber, which doesn’t operate in Kazakhstan, covers city transfers. Pay by card or Kaspi QR in Almaty, but carry more cash than usual for Saty and the lakes area.

One concrete tip: pack a small overnight bag separately from your main luggage before day five, not day six. Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai overnight run back to back in this plan, and you won’t want to repack a full suitcase between two long transport days.
