Six days is the full CBD-plus-islands spine plus a west coast day and a slower closing day: Days 1-2 are the Sky Tower, Devonport and Mt Eden, Days 3-4 are Waiheke and Rangitoto, Day 5 is Piha and Muriwai, Day 6 is One Tree Hill and Mission Bay. Day 1: Sky Tower, Viaduct and the Museum

Start at the Sky Tower (adult $47), then Waitematā Station (renamed from Britomart in September 2025) and Viaduct Harbour for lunch. Afternoon at the War Memorial Museum (international adult $32); the Māori and Pacific galleries stay closed since May 2025, possibly until 2029, though the cultural performance runs twice daily.

Day 2: Devonport, Mt Eden and Ponsonby

Ferry to Devonport (about $8-9 on AT HOP), walk Mt Victoria and North Head, then Mt Eden, 196m, free, 30-45 minutes round trip. Dinner in Ponsonby or K’Road.

Day 3: Waiheke Island

A 40-minute Fullers360 ferry (separate from AT HOP), then a bus, e-bike, rental car, or wine-tour shuttle to the beaches and cellar doors.

Day 4: Rangitoto Island

A 25-minute return-only Fullers360 ferry, book ahead, plus an hour-each-way summit walk over black lava. Bring your own food and water.

Day 5: West coast beaches

Rent a car for Piha (swim between the flags only) and Muriwai’s gannet colony (best November-February). The interior Waitākere bush tracks are under a kauri-dieback rāhui, but the beaches stay open.

Day 6: One Tree Hill and Mission Bay

Spend the morning at Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill and Cornwall Park, free, 220 hectares, a 20-minute summit walk over a roughly 67,000-year-old cone with a new boardwalk-and-stairs summit track completed in 2026, better footing than the old paths. The summit itself has been treeless since 2000 (the colonial-era pine was chainsaw-attacked twice by land-rights activists and formally felled that year), the view across the volcanic field is unchanged either way. Afternoon at Mission Bay, a free public beach with a promenade of cafés, check the Safeswim website before swimming since water quality can dip after heavy rain. Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE Aquarium is a short drive or bus ride from Mission Bay if you want an indoor option (adult from $39 online).

Is One Tree Hill worth visiting if the tree is gone?

Yes, the panorama is still one of the best in the city, and the story behind the missing tree, chainsaw attacks in 1994 and 1999 protesting Treaty settlement policy, is genuinely part of what makes the site interesting rather than a disappointment. Nine native trees were planted at the summit in 2016.

Is Mission Bay safe for swimming?

Usually, it’s a sheltered, patrolled eastern-bays beach, but check the Safeswim site same-day, Auckland’s beaches can see stormwater-overflow water quality dips after heavy rain. If Safeswim flags an issue, Long Bay on the North Shore is a reliable backup.

One practical note: the AT HOP $50/7-day cap genuinely pays for itself by Day 6 of city-based sightseeing, tally your bus and train trips so far, and it’s worth checking you’re capped rather than still paying per trip.
