Once you’re using Auckland as a base, the nature worth chasing is mostly a ferry or a drive away, not in the city itself. Nine spots below lean into that: four Hauraki Gulf islands, a Coromandel sea arch, and one deeper cut into the regional parks that most first-timers skip. The Hauraki Gulf: four islands, four different trips
Rangitoto, a $55 adult return fullers.co.nz ferry ride, is Auckland’s youngest volcano at roughly 600 years old, a 1-hour summit walk each way with no food, water, or shade on the island, so bring your own. Motutapu, linked to Rangitoto by a causeway, is open farmland and regenerating bush with WWII gun emplacements, walkable straight off the same ferry if you have time. Tiritiri Matangi, an 80-minute ferry (Wednesday to Sunday only, book well ahead through peak season), is a predator-free sanctuary where takahē, kōkako, and tīeke live wild and approachable. Waiheke, the most-visited of the four, pairs beaches and 30-plus vineyards with a 40-minute crossing, though you’ll need on-island transport to actually reach most of it.
Is Great Barrier Island worth it for nature alone?
Yes, if you have more than a day. It’s Auckland’s most remote Gulf island, off-grid with minimal cell coverage, and an International Dark Sky Sanctuary rated Bortle Class 1 in places, genuinely some of the best stargazing near any major city. Reach it by a roughly 30-minute flight (FlyMySky, Great Barrier Air) or a 4.5-hour SeaLink ferry, and plan it as a 2-3 night trip rather than a single day.
Coromandel: Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach
Cathedral Cove (Mautohe), about 175-185km and 2.5-3 hours from Auckland, is a sea arch and stack formation that auto-closes during orange or red DOC weather warnings, the coastline is still unstable after past cyclone damage, so check doc.govt.nz before you go. Hot Water Beach, nearby, is a genuine geothermal feature: dig a pool in the sand within roughly two hours either side of low tide and it fills with hot water, check tide times first or you’ll be digging in dry sand at high tide.
One deeper cut: Hunua Ranges beyond the waterfall
Most visitors stop at Hunua Falls, a 30-metre drop reachable on an easy 10-15 minute walk. Fewer continue on to the Cossey’s Creek/Massey Track Loop, a genuine 3-4 hour hike through the same drinking-water catchment area, a real option if the short waterfall walk feels too brief for the drive out.
Are the Waitākere Ranges beaches actually open?
Yes, the beaches stay open, it’s the connecting bush tracks that don’t. A kauri-dieback rāhui has been in force since December 2017, and interior tracks through the Waitākeres are largely closed or restricted, with mandatory boot-cleaning stations on any that remain open. Book Tiritiri Matangi and any Great Barrier Island flight before anything else on this list. Both run limited capacity and sell out well ahead of the Coromandel or Hunua options, which you can usually still plan on short notice.
