Day 1: Arrival And The Old Bagan Core
- Land at Nyaung-U Airport (NYU) and buy the archaeological zone pass immediately, 30,000 MMK, valid 3 consecutive days, you’ll need it everywhere
- Ease in at Shwezigon Pagoda, a gilded stupa near Nyaung-U that’s still an active pilgrimage site, not a roped-off ruin, and the Nyaung-U Market for lunch
- Rent an e-bike (roughly 8,000-10,000 MMK/day) and ride into Old Bagan for Ananda Temple, completed around 1105, its four standing Buddhas facing each direction, and Thatbyinnyu Temple, Bagan’s tallest at roughly 66m
- Sunset at a designated ground-level viewing mound, temple climbing is banned across the UNESCO-listed plain, so the mounds (or the Nan Myint Tower, for a fee) are the legal options now
Is it responsible and safe to visit Myanmar in 2026? It’s genuinely defensible either way. Myanmar’s been under military rule since the 2021 coup, and the US , UK, Australia and Canada all advise against travel there. Bagan’s temples are calm and physically safe, but zone-fee revenue and some hotel profits reach a junta at war with its own population, worth weighing before you book, not after.
Day 2: The Biggest Temples And Departure
- Sunrise from a viewing mound, or the hot air balloon instead if you booked it, that slot replaces this one and typically lands you in time for a late breakfast
- Dhammayangyi Temple, Bagan’s largest by mass, a fortress-like brick pile with inner corridors mysteriously bricked up
- Sulamani Temple, late-12th-century, dense carving outside and murals worth slowing down for
- Lunch in Old Bagan, then a last e-bike loop toward Myinkaba village before heading back for your flight or onward transport
How much cash should I carry for 2 days? Plan on $60-100 in USD or MMK equivalent per person beyond the zone fee and any prebooked balloon: hotel incidentals, e-bike rental, meals and tips. Cards and ATMs mostly fail here, sanctions have made both unreliable, so bring clean, unmarked notes rather than counting on plastic.
Two days is genuinely tight for a plain this dense, roughly 3,595 recorded monuments, not just the handful above. If Ananda and Dhammayangyi both land for you on day one, that’s a strong signal to come back with the 3-day plan and actually slow down.
