7 Days in Belgrade: The History Itinerary
Seven days is the full history-core route: the 6 day itinerary spine plus a last day going deeper into Kalemegdan’s underground tunnels and up the region’s tallest building at Belgrade Waterfront. Base in Stari Grad or Dorcol, pay in dinars, ride the free public transport everywhere. Day 1: Kalemegdan Fortress and Stari Grad
Morning
Arrive on the free bus 72 and settle into Stari Grad or Dorcol. Kalemegdan’s grounds are free 24 hours, the confluence view is Belgrade’s defining sight, and the Military Museum inside runs roughly 300 RSD.

Knez Mihailova to Republic Square.

Skadarlija for cevapi and live kafana music.
Day 2: Saint Sava and Nikola Tesla Museum
Morning
Free tram to Vracar for the Church of Saint Sava, its dome mosaic built from roughly 50 million pieces of Murano glass, stone and gold.
Afternoon
Nikola Tesla Museum , guided-only, ending with a live Tesla coil demonstration: visible high-voltage arcs and a fluorescent tube lit with no wires attached. Book English slots ahead.

Dinner in Dorcol.
Day 3: Museum of Yugoslavia and Novi Beograd

About an hour to Smederevo by bus, hired car, or guided tour for the Danube fortress, a second, less-restored counterpart to Kalemegdan.
Afternoon
Walk the fortress and town streets; a winery stop if time allows.
Evening
Return to Belgrade for dinner in Stari Grad.
Day 7: Kalemegdan in Depth and Belgrade Waterfront
Morning
Go back into Kalemegdan for what you skipped on day one: the underground tunnel and casemate tours, ticketed separately through local operators or on-site, and a slower pass through the Military Museum if you rushed it the first time.
Afternoon
Walk or tram down to Belgrade Waterfront on the Sava, a large, genuinely controversial redevelopment (no competitive tender, disputed land transfers, heritage objections over cleared Yugoslav-modernist buildings) whose centerpiece, Kula Belgrade, opened in October 2024 as the region’s tallest building at 168 meters. The observation deck ticket price was not consistently confirmed at research time, so check the current rate before you go up.
Evening
Farewell dinner in Skadarlija, the same bohemian quarter you started the trip in on day one, closing the loop.
Is the Belgrade Waterfront Observation Deck Worth the Detour?
It is worth an hour if skyline views genuinely interest you, but go in aware of the context rather than treating it as a simple photo stop. The wider Waterfront project carries real, well-documented controversy over its land deal and the Yugoslav-era buildings cleared to build it, alongside the district’s actual new highlight, the tallest building in the region.
Do I Need to Book the Tesla Museum Before I Arrive?
Yes, guided tours only, English slots capped at a couple daily. Reported 2026 pricing runs from roughly 400 RSD to a flat 800 RSD depending on the language track and source, so confirm the current rate and book ahead by phone or email.
