Is 2 days enough to see Varanasi beyond the ghats?
Barely, and only if Sarnath is the one thing you protect. Two days fits one anchor ghat evening plus a full Sarnath day capped with a short food stop; the silk quarter, Ramnagar Fort and BHU all wait for a return trip or a longer itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival and the one ghat evening
Settle into a base at Assi Ghat, the calmer southern end of the riverfront, or Gurudham/south Varanasi if you’d rather have car access. Spend the afternoon acclimating rather than diving straight into the busiest lanes. In the evening, walk north toward Dashashwamedh Ghat and watch the Ganga Aarti from the steps (free, arrive 30-45 minutes early). If your route passes Manikarnika Ghat, remember the rule that matters most in this city: no photographs of pyres, bodies, or mourners, ever, and observe only from a quiet distance if you choose to at all.
Day 2: Sarnath and departure
Take an auto-rickshaw or taxi roughly 10km northeast to Sarnath (30-45 minutes depending on traffic). Walk the Dhamek Stupa and the archaeological park, stop at the Chaukhandi Stupa on the way in, and give the site museum real time, it holds the original Ashoka Lion Capital, the sculpture now stamped on every Indian passport and currency note. Entry runs roughly INR 100-300 for foreigners across the site and museum (verify the exact split, sources disagree). On the way back into the city, stop in Kachori Gali for kachori-sabzi or tamatar chaat before you pack and head to Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (VNS, roughly 25-26km, 40-55 minutes) or Varanasi Junction.
Do you need a guide for Sarnath?
Not strictly, the site is well signed and small enough to self-navigate in half a day. A guide earns its cost if you want the Buddhist history explained properly rather than pieced together from placards, and a booked half-day tour also solves the return transport question, which matters most when a flight is waiting.
