2 Days From Kolkata: Sundarbans and Beyond
Two days based in Kolkata is enough for the two closest, easiest trips out of the city: the free Dakshineswar and Belur Math temple pair on the northern edge, and the old French river town of Chandannagar an hour further out. Day 1: Dakshineswar and Belur Math
- Start early at Dakshineswar Kali Temple, the Kolkata Metro Blue Line’s northern terminus, free entry, roughly 5am-12:30pm and 3-8:30pm
- Cross the Hooghly by the short ferry or a road crossing to Belur Math, headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission founded by Swami Vivekananda, also free, roughly 6am-12pm and 3:30-8:30pm
- Both sit close enough together that a relaxed morning and early afternoon covers them without rushing
- Back in central Kolkata by evening, settle in around Park Street or New Market and rest up for tomorrow’s train
Day 2: Chandannagar and the French Strand
- Catch a Howrah-line local train to Chandannagar, about 50-55 minutes, or drive it in under an hour
- Walk the Chandannagar Strand, the landscaped riverside promenade that is the clearest surviving trace of the town’s French colonial era
- Stop at the Institut de Chandernagor museum for the French-era photographs and artifacts, a quiet, uncrowded hour
- Return by early evening local train, Howrah station is a short cab or Metro ride from most central hotels
Is 2 days enough to see anything outside Kolkata?
Yes, for these two specifically. Both Dakshineswar and Belur Math cost nothing to enter, and Chandannagar needs only a local train ticket, no permits or advance bookings anywhere in this plan. What 2 days will not stretch to is Shantiniketan, Murshidabad or the Sundarbans, all of which need a full day or more each, so do not try to squeeze one in on top of this pair.
Should I do Chandannagar or Shantiniketan if I only have 1 spare day?
Chandannagar, if the choice is close. It is under an hour away, needs no early start, and still delivers a genuinely different colonial history than the British-era sights inside Kolkata itself. Save Shantiniketan, which eats most of a day just in travel, for a trip where you actually have a 3rd day to spend on it.
