5 Days From Kolkata: Sundarbans and Beyond
Five days repeats our 4-day version exactly for Days 1 through 4, Dakshineswar and Belur Math, Chandannagar, Shantiniketan, Murshidabad, then makes an honest call on Day 5 rather than forcing the Sundarbans into a slot too small for it. If tigers and mangroves are the actual priority, the 6-day express version or the full 7-day trip fit the Sundarbans in properly instead.

Day 1: Dakshineswar and Belur Math
- Dakshineswar Kali Temple, free entry, roughly 5am-12:30pm and 3-8:30pm
- Belur Math across the river, headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, also free, roughly 6am-12pm and 3:30-8:30pm
Day 2: Chandannagar and the French Strand
- Local train from Howrah, about 50-55 minutes, to the Chandannagar Strand and the Institut de Chandernagor museum
Day 3: Shantiniketan, Tagore’s university town
- The Shantiniketan Express from Howrah at 10:00am, arriving Bolpur around 12:15pm, the Visva-Bharati campus and Uttarayan complex
Day 4: Murshidabad and Hazarduari Palace
- The Hazarduari Express from Kolkata around 6:50am, entry Rs 25 Indian visitors, Rs 300 foreign nationals, 9am-4:30pm, closed Fridays
Day 5: A genuine free day
- Do the math honestly: even the express 1-night Sundarbans tour needs 2 full days, and this itinerary only has 1 left, so do not attempt it here
- Best use of this day is whichever of the first 4 you enjoyed most, a slower repeat of Chandannagar’s Strand, or an unhurried extra morning at Shantiniketan’s Uttarayan complex if you can rearrange a train
- Otherwise, treat it as a genuine rest day around Park Street or New Market, laundry, packing, and a proper sit-down Bengali thali before you fly out

Why not just squeeze a rushed Sundarbans day trip into Day 5?
Because the math does not work. Even the compressed 1-night, 2-day express package needs 2 days, and a same-day round trip from Kolkata leaves almost no real time in the mangroves after the 3-4 hour drive and boat transfer each way. A rushed version delivers a long bus ride and little else, which is worse than not going at all. Is 5 days the right length for a first Kolkata gateway trip?
It is a solid, honest middle ground, all 4 single-day trips without sprinting, plus a real buffer day for delays or a second look at your favorite. If the Sundarbans matters more to you than having a spare day, add a 6th day instead and go with the express tour.
Keep Day 5 loosely planned rather than fixed, it is the one day in this trip built for whatever the first 4 days actually leave you wanting more of. The West Bengal Tourism site is worth a browse that day if you want ideas for a slower repeat visit.
