3 Days From Kolkata: Sundarbans and Beyond
Three days keeps Day 1 and 2 identical to our 2-day version , Dakshineswar and Belur Math, then Chandannagar, and adds a 3rd day for Shantiniketan, Rabindranath Tagore’s university town about 145km out. Day 1: Dakshineswar and Belur Math
- Dakshineswar Kali Temple, the Blue Line Metro’s northern terminus, free entry, roughly 5am-12:30pm and 3-8:30pm
- A short ferry or road crossing to Belur Math, headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, also free, roughly 6am-12pm and 3:30-8:30pm
- Back to a Park Street or New Market hotel by evening, an early night ahead of tomorrow’s train day
Day 2: Chandannagar and the French Strand
- Local train from Howrah to Chandannagar, about 50-55 minutes
- The Chandannagar Strand, the riverside promenade left over from the town’s French colonial period, plus the Institut de Chandernagor museum
- Early evening train back, no need to rush since services run frequently
Day 3: Shantiniketan, Tagore’s university town
- Catch the Shantiniketan Express from Howrah at 10:00am, arriving Bolpur around 12:15pm, about 2 hours 15 minutes, or check other services running up to 2.5-3 hours
- Visit the Visva-Bharati campus and the Uttarayan complex of Tagore’s former residences
- If it is roughly November through March, swing by the Sonajhuri haat, the weekend market under the trees
- Take a later-afternoon or evening service back to Howrah, confirm the current timetable before you leave Kolkata that morning
Is 3 days enough for these gateway trips?
Enough for the two closest trips plus one longer one, which is a reasonable first bite of what Kolkata can reach. What it skips entirely is Murshidabad and the Sundarbans, both of which need a dedicated day or more of their own. The 4-day version is the next real step up if Murshidabad’s Hazarduari Palace interests you. The West Bengal Tourism site is worth a check for any current road or rail advisories before you commit to the Shantiniketan day.
Can I do Shantiniketan as a rushed half day instead?
Not really, and you should not try. Between the roughly 4.5 hours of round-trip train time and the campus itself, a genuine visit needs most of a full day. Trim it to a half day and you will spend more time on the platform than at Tagore’s ashram, which defeats the point of going that far.
