5 Days in Cairo and Egypt

Travel advisory: Egypt sits on the edge of the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The country is not a combatant, and Cairo, Giza, and the Nile Valley remain the normal, actively-visited tourist core, with 2026 tourism hitting record numbers. There has been limited spillover, including a July 2026 drone strike on ships at Damietta port in the north, far from any tourist site. At the time of writing the US State Department lists Egypt at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), with “Do Not Travel” limited to the Sinai interior and the remote Western Desert, not the places in this guide. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, since the situation is fluid.

Book these before you go

Day 1: The Cairo Core

Morning

The Giza Plateau via the new south-side Visitors Center and free shuttle (about 700 EGP, about $14, verify).

Afternoon

The Grand Egyptian Museum, fully open since November 2025 (about 1,450 EGP, about $30; book at tickets.gem.eg).

Evening

Dinner in Zamalek.

Day 2: Islamic Cairo

Morning

The Citadel of Saladin and Muhammad Ali Mosque, then Al-Azhar Mosque.

Afternoon

Khan el-Khalili bazaar and mint tea at El Fishawy Café, open since 1797.

Evening

Koshari at Abou Tarek.

Day 3: Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur

Morning

Saqqara, about an hour out, for the Step Pyramid of Djoser.

Afternoon

Memphis, then Dahshur for the Bent and Red Pyramids.

Evening

Return to Cairo for dinner.

Day 4: Alexandria

Morning

Train from Ramses Station to Alexandria, about 2-3 hours; the Bibliotheca Alexandrina first.

Afternoon

The Citadel of Qaitbay and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa.

Evening

A walk along the Corniche before the train back; a genuinely long day given the round trip.

Day 5: Fayoum and Wadi El Hitan

Morning

Drive about two hours via the Western Desert road to Fayoum.

Afternoon

Wadi El Hitan (“Valley of the Whales”), a UNESCO-listed site of fossil whale skeletons marking an early stage of whale evolution from land to sea. Book with an established operator for this one.

Evening

Return to Cairo for a farewell dinner.

Getting Around and Where to Stay

Uber and Careem both work well in Cairo for the two city days; the day trips run on a driver, tour operator, or train (Alexandria). Zamalek stays a convenient base throughout.

One concrete tip: don’t stack the Alexandria and Fayoum days back to back. Both involve several hours of driving or train time each way, and back-to-back long days tend to leave the least energy for the sights themselves.
