2 Days in Guangzhou: First-Timer Itinerary

Two days in Guangzhou is enough to hit the history, the skyline, and the food, as long as you don’t try to squeeze in a Pearl River Delta day trip too. Day 1 goes old-city, Day 2 goes modern-city. Day 1: Yuexiu Park and Beijing Road

Land at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) and take Metro Line 3 from Airport North into the city, about 50-60 minutes for 7-14 yuan ($1-2). Baiyun’s Terminal 1 closed for good on 7 May 2026, so if you’re flying a foreign carrier you’ll most likely arrive at the new Terminal 3, which has no metro station yet: take its intercity rail about 28 minutes to Guangzhou South, or the 5-minute hop to Airport North for 5 yuan to catch Line 3 directly.

Once you’re settled, spend the late morning at Yuexiu Park, free and open 6am to 10pm, home to the Five Rams Statue that ties to the city’s founding legend. Walk the gardens, then head to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street for lunch and an afternoon of shopping. Beijing Road has nothing to do with the city of Beijing, it’s just a street name, and it happens to be the densest dim sum strip in the city. Try Dian Dou De for a mid-range spread around 50-70 yuan ($7-10) per person, ordering two dishes at a time with tea rather than loading the table, the traditional “yat zong leung gin” rhythm. Book your hotel near Yuexiu or Beijing Road for the shortest walk back after dinner.

Is 2 days enough to see Guangzhou?

Two days covers a solid first look: the historic core, the skyline, and a real dim sum meal. It skips Shamian Island, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, and any Pearl River Delta day trip, all of which fit better into the 3-day or longer versions of this itinerary.

Day 2: Canton Tower and the Pearl River

Head to Tianhe in the morning for the Canton Tower. The base ticket for the 433m and 450m decks runs about 150 yuan ($21), with combo tickets toward 228 yuan ($33) adding the 488m Outdoor Observation Deck, the highest in the world. Book online ahead, since day-of tickets can sell out around Canton Fair weeks. Spend the afternoon walking Zhujiang New Town, the glass-and-steel CBD anchored by the Zaha Hadid-designed Guangzhou Opera House.

As evening sets in, board a Pearl River night cruise : the basic sightseeing version runs 70-100 yuan ($10-15), or pay 180-280 yuan ($25-40) for a dinner cruise with a Cantonese buffet. Boats leave from Tianzi Wharf, Dashatou Wharf, or the Canton Tower’s own Fortune Wharf roughly between 6:40pm and 10:10pm. Book at least a day ahead in peak season.

What’s the best way to get around Guangzhou in 2 days?

The metro, paired with Alipay or WeChat Pay. Open the transport section of either app, generate a Guangzhou Metro Pass QR code, and scan it at the gate, no top-up needed. Both apps let visitors link a foreign card since 2023-24. Use DiDi rather than a street taxi for anything the metro doesn’t reach directly.

Two more things worth knowing before you land: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube are all blocked here, so install and test a VPN at home before you fly. And near Shamian Island or the Canton Tower, politely decline any stranger inviting you to a “tea culture experience,” it’s a well-documented scam that ends in a bill running into the thousands of yuan.
