5 Days: Vegas and Nevada Parks

Day 1: Hoover Dam and Lake Mead

Morning

The shortest drive of the five, 45 minutes southeast. The Visitor Center ($15 adult / $12 ages 4-16) covers exhibits, a film, and the rooftop deck.

Afternoon

Add the Power Plant Tour (roughly $25-30) or the Guided Dam Tour (roughly $40) if booked ahead. Walking the crest is free. A short stop at Lake Mead on the way back sets up day 5’s return visit. Current tour times are on the official Hoover Dam tours page .

Evening

Back on the Strip for dinner. Four driving days still ahead.

Day 2: Red Rock Canyon

Morning

17 miles west, 20-30 minutes out. October through May needs a $2 timed-entry reservation for the Scenic Drive plus a $15 per-vehicle fee.

Afternoon

Drive the 13-mile loop and add Calico Tanks (2.5 miles round trip), the classic short hike through red and cream sandstone. Check current conditions on the official Red Rock Canyon site .

Evening

Day 3: Valley of Fire

Morning

Nevada’s oldest state park, 50-60 minutes northeast. Entrance $15/vehicle non-resident ($10 resident); visitor center hours 9am-4pm, park open sunrise to sunset.

Afternoon

Rainbow Vista, the Fire Wave, and White Domes cover the highlights and the roughly 2,000-year-old petroglyphs in about half a day. Current hours are posted on the Valley of Fire State Park page .

Evening

Drive back for dinner on the Strip.

Day 4: Mount Charleston

Morning

45 minutes northwest. Charleston Peak tops out at 11,916 feet, and the elevation runs 20-30 degrees cooler than the Strip. Hiking is free.

Afternoon

Pick a shorter forest loop from the 60-plus miles of trails rather than a summit attempt (those run 16-21 miles round trip). Pack a layer. Trail conditions are posted on the Spring Mountains NRA site .

Evening

Drive back down for a last-of-the-heat Strip dinner.

Day 5: Seven Magic Mountains and Lake Mead

Morning

Seven Magic Mountains sits 20-25 minutes south of the Strip and costs nothing. Ugo Rondinone’s stack of neon boulder towers was meant to stand two years starting in 2016; it’s since been extended through at least May 2027. Budget 20-30 minutes, it’s a photo stop, not a hike. Afternoon

Loop back to Lake Mead for boating, swimming, or kayaking, a genuinely different pace than day 1’s dam-focused visit. Boulder Beach and the Lake Mead Marina both work for a few unrushed hours of water time before the drive back.

Evening

Last dinner back on the Strip, pace yourself after five days of driving and heat.

Do Seven Magic Mountains and Lake Mead Really Pair Well?

Yes, they sit roughly 20-25 minutes apart in the same southeastern direction, so combining them avoids backtracking across the metro area. The mismatch in pace, a 20-minute photo stop against a multi-hour lake afternoon, actually works in the itinerary’s favor after four straight days of scheduled driving.

Which of the Five Trips Should You Cut if Day 5 Runs Long?

Cut Lake Mead before Seven Magic Mountains. The neon boulders take 20-30 minutes total and cost nothing, while a real Lake Mead visit needs at least two unhurried hours to be worth the drive; if you’re short on time, a quick look from the shore near Hoover Dam on day 1 covers the essentials instead.

Refill the tank before day 5; between Mount Charleston’s mountain roads on day 4 and the Lake Mead loop, this trip burns more gas than the other four combined.
